Hi all, I just had kind of a random question. Some of my friends with older siblings have told me that ATAR doesn't really matter because you can just take a gap year and then it expires. Is this true? If it is, how would you be able to get into uni without an ATAR? So confused 🤣

after someone becomes 21 their atar won't matter and they can get into uni as a mature student.

It really depends on the uni. I wouldn’t say ATAR doesn’t matter because if it doesn’t then what’s the point of getting one in the first place?

Study hard and get a good ATAR! 😀 That will save you the hassle of having to go through bridging courses and similar pathways.

Lowkey doesn’t really matter unless you want to do med.
BUT if you take one gap year, UAC will just use your last years ATAR. You need to take 3-4 gap years to have the ATAR erased and to be considered under mature aged pathways (which are often much more limited).

mature age also blocks law at certain places i think.

Oh okay thanks everyone, I didn't think your atar would be erased just after 1 year but I wasn't sure. Thanks

sounds like bs to me tbh
Nah its actually pretty hard to be a lawyer in australia period, but if you go to WSU its actually gonna be a treck to find a job as a lawyer and so you probs would be working a random office job that you are way too qualified for

By this logic, might as well abolish the degree. Pretty useless to study law if you're gonna end up at an office, yet a lot of students study law at wsu? What? Can't talk about "most students being dumb" either, every uni has its share of smart and dumb students. Can't say they're doing it for the money either, people aren't dumb enough to be fooled by such things anymore.

it's good for making money so they won't abolish it lol.

last time i heard, macquarie uni law doesn't have the best employment prospects either.

An entry position law job being hard to get doesn’t exactly correlate to not being able to get a law job with a wsu or macquarie degree.
It's not easy to get a law job with a degree from any uni lol.

and that does correlate to wsu/mac having worse chances which does indeed make it hard to get a law job.

with enough applicants, companies can essentially cull in the first round by uni. although there are possibly some companies which don't do this, there probably are indeed companies which do.

The assumption that applicants can be distinguished based on the uni they got their degree from is delusional.

Most companies know uni is not (or no longer is) a reliable factor to decide whether an applicant is good or bad.

Contrary to popular belief, wsu and mq have good law teachers who are overshadowed due to the "reputation" of these unis.
