In single card terms, the GTX 512 only just beats the X1800XT (reference: 3DMark05), but then again, it all comes down to what games you play

I dont see any huge difference.

Huge diffs don't occur in same gen, what were you expecting? Point is, it offers around 30% performance increase over the 256MB version, manages to surpass the X1800 at certain settings at even flagship titles like HL2, and is now also an AA/AF killer. A 30% increase over any previous version of the card within the same gen is huge.
