Avoid Student Activity Fees (1 Viewer)

As you may know, UNSW is planning to charge Student Activity Fees for Session 2, 2006. They are allowed to do this only if they issue the invoice before July 1st.

There is a loophole in that, if you discontinue your program before the June 19th and then resume it after July 1st, you might avoid having to pay Student Activity Fees.

There is a second, friendlier loophole in that, if you reduce your S2 load to 0 units before June 19th then you might also avoid having to pay Student Activity Fees. This is mainly to save UNSW the admin time of having to deal with hundreds/thousands of students queuing up.

(This is not yet confirmed, since UNSW are taking their sweet time to reply to my email).

I would strongly advise anyone not to do what is suggested above without contacting UNSW themselves to confirm these matters.

Indeed, you could do that. Or you could waltz up to the chancellert and start yelling at them until

a) the VC, registrar, deputy VC or whoever else you picked a fight with throws you out
b) security throws you out
c) you're expelled from UNSW for misconduct
d) you're sick and tired of doing it

Either way, I'm still dissapointed that we're being charged for next semester.

This is interesting. Unfortunately I won't be around to try and test this, but yeah, as MS said, don't try it without asking the uni first...BOS does not take responsibility for any negative consequences this may have on your enrolment status!

I would strongly discourage the above actions.

Futher academic emails dismiss most of the above, and the above doesn't point out many risks involving in dropping/discontinuing etc.

Unfortunately, I think fees are going to be here for S2 as well.

Please ignore the above post which is blatent scaremongering. I'm not aware of any real "risks" if you use the second method. The first method may have some risks if they decide not to let you continue after taking program leave, but I can't see that happening especially on any kind of large scale.

To remove the last 3/6 UOC from my.unsw, I think that you will need to contact a course withdrawal/variation supervisor within your faculty who should be able to help. Otherwise, studentfees@ or studentcentral@ could point you in the right direction if they ever reply.

Dear Student

Last week I wrote to all students indicating that the Council of the University
had given its support to the student associations’ request for Student Activity
fees to be charged for semester 2, 2006. This is allowed under Commonwealth
Government legislation.

Several students have since asked me what would happen if they withdrew from
their course/s prior to July 1 and then re-enrolled after July 1 2006 in order
to avoid paying the Student Activity fees. I recommend strongly that you do not
take this action.

If you are planning to discontinue your enrolment you need to be aware of some
consequences and potential problems:

A request made now to withdraw from your semester 2 courses will be considered
as a request to discontinue from the entire program for the semester. You
should be aware that if you discontinue your semester 2 enrolment, and you then
seek re-enrolment at any stage in the future, any new enrolment will not be
automatic. You will need to seek the express permission of the Director of
Student Services, outlining in full the special circumstances that exist in
your case. Avoidance of Student Activity fees will not be considered reason
enough.

In the event that re-enrolment in semester 2, 2006 is permitted, there can be
no guarantee that it will be possible to re-enrol in the same courses
(especially elective courses), classes, laboratories or tutorials as you are
enrolled in currently.
If you are readmitted in semester 2, 2006 a reinstatement fee of $250 will be
charged. On the other hand paying the Student Activity fee of $256.80 [full-
time Kensington campus rate] directly benefits the majority of students
(through clubs and societies, representation, advocacy, sport and recreation,
services, etc) and the University is committed to returning all such fees
collected to student associations.

If despite my advice you wish to withdraw from your semester 2 enrolment then
your application to do so must be made no later than 14 July 2006 by email to
studentfees@unsw.edu.au . The following information is required:

Name and student identity number
Program code and name
Detail of all course/s to be dropped
Reasons for withdrawal

For further enquiries please contact the University by email at
studentfees@unsw.edu.au or go to Student Central, Lower Ground Floor,
Chancellery Building, Kensington Campus.
