Hehe, interesting thread... are you two flirting? :p

Now... what input can I have... I started B Com (Lib) last year, so I know all the dramas you are going through...

I'm doing Marketing and Govt as my majors, but I'm doing Govt as one of my commerce majors (check the list in your handbook on the Com Lib majors page and see if its still an option for you). First semester marketing is very basic (and as such, very boring) but you'll generally find that with most first year subjects. The group project was fun though (we ate lots of pizza, and drank lots of wine)

Spin Spin - I'd check about ECOF1002 if I were you - ECOF1002 is generally the one for non native speakers. (unless you're a non-native speaker... gah, the confusion of not knowing people!). The ECOF subject is a fairly interesting subject. I didnt really get along well with Paton, and some of the technical sides of it were kind of tedious and boring, but the essays are interesting to write: pornography, marijuana, comic book heroes, etc.

Are you also going to enrol in ECMT1010 at some stage? Because you'll need it to to be able to enrol in your second marketing subject (which proved to be totally illogical, as you don't need any of the skills at all).

Abs -
Art history was the worst taught subject I did. The tutes were okay, but the lecturers had no idea how to lecture.

On the flipside, CLAW lectures (and the subject as a whole) were generally pretty decent! I didn't really find it dry - there were lots of interesting examples and case studies for you to get your teeth in, and you even get to go to the court and do a court report (my case was a woman charged with stealing frozen meat from woolies in her handbag... hmm)

Finally, I agree with everything Melb said about Gil's World Politics - I look back on those Thursday mornings and shudder. I look back on the entire subject and shudder, actually. (It was the opposite with Power in Society for me - I found the lectures really interesting, and had much more fun writing about how the government was destroying australian culture, as opposed to the economic defences of taiwan - but its a personal preference).

Have fun with the degree. And laugh as often as you can at accounting people. (hehe, sorry abs - most of my com lib friends did the subject to avoid accounting)

argh!!! i was told at enrolment to do ecof1002.... jesus... i'll have to ring someone and confirm... wheres Toods?? she'll confirm too.... mrargrhh. can you do ecof1001 in semester 2 as well??

yeah i'll have to pick up ECMT1010 for second semester, is it hard? i havent done maths since year 10 and i havent PASSED it since year 9.... soooo..... yeah. i'm hoping its all easy calculator stuff... otherwise i'm screwed in a big way.

yeah i definitely chose com. lib to avoid the accounting!! but then i end up having to do ECMT1010 anyway and its all the same thing to my brain,...... yuergh

Snakeoils, but Power and Society, unlike Aust Pol or World Pol, does not provide that framework of understanding for future units of study. Its more just a random subject for first year.
I dunno... while its less rigid/theory based, it can give a very good understanding of the australian political climate, so to speak - the effects of the media on political decisions, how equality laws come into play in policy making, the role of welfare in the state - it should certainly help me when i do Politics and Ethics.

i really hated ECMT (sorry :p)

but then, i was a slacker, and went to maybe 3 lectures the entire time, and did none of the homework... so if you dont do that, you should be able to grasp it (and not try and learn the entire course a week before the exam... i got 51... go figure)

and on a positive note, some of the tutors are pretty cute. Try and get Matt.

Abs, can I suggest you consider doing Corp Law instead of Claw1002... its a second year sub, but they let 1st year people do it if you ask... its much more useful than Claw1002... (unless you want to become a real estate agent!)

Hmmm ok. So can i change that at the end of semester 1?
Yeah you can change all your subjects at the end of the semester. Which comes in handy, believe me. I think I changed about 3 of my 4 subjects for 2nd semester. You really don't know what you're going to like at uni until you start it.

Every single person I know who has done Pol and Ethics, have said that they struggle to find its usefulness.

So I guess, one unuseful subject, may help another unuseful

And yes, its less rigid/theory based - that is the whole point. First year subjects are meant to provide the theoretical framework to induct into real world scenario's encountered in senior units.

Who was the Power & Society lecturer anyway?

are you doing Govt 2 Honours?
i've been told that Lyn Carson (who is taking it this year) isn't the nicest lady in the department - which is a shame, considering I'll have her for both my govt subjects next semester. Would have been better to get Ariadne (who took it last year) - someone who is incredibly nice if you get to know her.
I guess it really comes down to what area of government you're aiming to work in. I have no interest in defence, or finance, or anything like that. I'm much more interested in equality and social justice and the environment.

The lecturer for Power was... umm... (wish i went to more lectures)... one of them was Shelley (useless) and... the guy was... Michael Hogan (i had to look that up - shame). The lectures weren't that interesting, it was the tutes that I found stimulating and meaty - lots of debates, and arguing and passion. It was great.

I'm not sure about govt honours yet... i got the letter, but i dunno... my main focus at the moment is marketing, so i think doing govt honours would require a level of devotion i dont really have. I'll think about it though.

When did you get the letter? mine hasn't come - probably because I succesfully preenrolled in it (because my Semester 1 results - met the criteria). I might ring the Govt office and find out tommorow.

Also anyone got the ECOP one yet?

Also might be because I got offered a transfer, but didn't accept the transfer.
I got the letter back in December... still havent really read it, coz it arrived the day i was heading back to Byron... but its in my suitcase...
