Hi Guys,

I have a really big dilemma. So I got offered for B Engineering and B Science. I want to major in Mechanical for Engineering and Maths for Science.

http://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/programs/2013/3711.html

I have no idea what subjects to pick for this semester. I tried to look at the course program online and it will only lead me to information about the program and not really what subjects to choose.

I realise I have to do 4 subjects this semester and I have narrowed it down to: MATH1141 and PHYS1131. I am not sure what other 2 subjects to pick.

Please help me !

Much appreciated,

Kayven.

ENGG1811 (if you can't program for your life) or COMP1911 (you have decent logic) or COMP1917 (you like programming)

You need to refer to the general mech eng handbook page and the mathematics major page. In the page you listed, it just tells how many UOC you need to do, what electives you don't do (i.e. you don't do general education electives) and any conditions such as you need to replace MATH2019 (for a straight mech eng degree) with 2 MATH2xxx courses (there's a PDF file which tells you) since you're also majoring in maths.

Oh okay. So I realise that during first year of my degree, I need to cover: MATH1A, MATH1B, PHYS1131, ENG1000, MMAN1300, ENG1811.

This is only 6 subjects meaning so far I have 3 subjects per semester. Since I am doing the Science degree, should I fill the other 2 missing subjects with a science elective?

I was thinking this semester to do: MATH1A, PHYS1311, ENG1000 and MATH1081 (discrete mathematics)

I didnt choose ENGG1811 because it is prerequisite of MATH1A and PHYS1311

So, do you think that my subjects are good for this semester?

You should fill your other two with Discrete Maths and another First Year Engineering Elective: http://www.eng.unsw.edu.au/information-for/current-students/undergraduates/1st-years/electives Note here that MATH1081 is also a First Year Engineering Elective so this is quite beneficial for you.

Although, I filled up one of the spots with ELEC1111 which was fine. This just means I'll be doing another First Year Elective later this year or even next year, whenever appropriate.

ENGG1811 does not have any prerequisites: https://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/courses/2013/ENGG1811.html

So you can still the subject combination I've listed above. I reckon you should get computing over and done with. With the assignments in MMAN1300 and the work in MATH1231/1241, having to do ENGG1811 with that wouldn't be good, IMO.

Its the downfall of having to do engineering (science to a lesser extent). Its double the hours compared to commerce students.

Okay, this would probably be my final one: MATH 1141, PHYS1131, MATH1081 and ENGG1811. Good?

I guess this would be fine, but the issue is that for ENGG1000, you are limited in the project availability. You are able to select a group project to do from any school but in second semester, you are limited to a few options. This isn't really a problem if you don't care what project you undertake, but students generally do it in first semester.

For Phys1131 and math1081, you could easily do those in semester 2.

COMP1911 is not a prerequisite for any other courses in Mechanical Engineering is it? Also, can we change our courses around if say I wanted to COMP1911 instead of ENGG1811?

Best to do PHYS1121/1131 in first semester because that's a prerequisite for MMAN1300 which in turn is a prerequisite for 2nd year subjects. You'll put yourself in a bad situation if you decide to do that in second semester.

Correct. Yes, you can definitely do COMP1911 instead - I did COMP1917 (though unless you are keen for programming, I wouldn't recommend you choose that). Up until this year, COMP1911 was the recommended computing course for mechanical engineering, so if you know mech students in later years, they would have most likely done COMP1911 and can help you there.

So no further courses have prerequisite for COMP1911?

Thank you so much D94 !!!

Well, technically COMP1921 has COMP1911 as a prerequisite but COMP1921 is not a core - it's on the First Year Engineering Electives list: http://www.eng.unsw.edu.au/information-for/current-students/undergraduates/1st-years/electives but you aren't required to choose that subject. If you do want to do COMP1921, that would mean you'll need to have done COMP1911.

But besides that, you can do COMP1911 without issue.

Are you confusing MMAN1300 (Engineering Mechanics) with MMAN1130 (Design for Manufacture)?

Oh right, that doesn't really matter. I would do MMAN1300 in the first year because that's a prerequisite for a few 2nd year subjects which in turn are also prerequisites for later year subjects. If you don't do it this year, you are restricted as to what second year subjects you can do because some might only be offered in 1 semester.

Also, there are only 2 Level I maths courses for the maths major, so you can't even choose 2 Science courses for the first year which aren't MATH1A/1B, so you'll have to do engineering subjects anyway.

For other Science majors, say Chemistry, there are more Level I courses, so students are best to do those courses in first year.

Those plans are just a guide, not a compulsory outline of what you need to do. They are also outdated, e.g. MMAN1130 isn't offered in second semester anymore. Many students complete the subjects which are prerequisites for others before starting their second degree.
