Just follow four simple steps;

ALWAYS balance elements in the following order
  • metals
  • non-metals
  • hydrogen
  • oxygen

Remember to include states of mater in EVERY reaction, all substance in a combustion reaction (your example) are gaseous. So,
2CH3OH(g) + O2(g) ---> CO2(g) + H2O(g) + heat

Hope that helps too.

George

Shouldn't that be dual arrow for equillibirum?

If it were a case where the heat was dissapating into the air then there probably wouldn't be much backwards movement would there?

P.S How are you notating a double arrow on this forum (<---->)?

It is a COMBUSTION REACTION (in other words, its a non-spontaneous redox reaction) these are not equilibrium systems.
