Hey, I need some popular elective choices most students chooses or good/suitable electives. I'm already taking up ACCG253 with STAT279 and BUSL250, and I can't think of my last one! Any suggestions is welcome, thanks!

hey, im 3rd year BAppFin. My advice is do as many core subjects as early as possible. so if you havent done any second year econ, i'd do that. Or, if you have, econ350 should be ok semester 1. I havent done it but the lecturer, Sean Turnell, is good and shouldnt be too hard.

If you leave your third year core stuff till the end its a bitch cause of time table clashes. Like, of the 9 units you can choose from in 3rd year all of them are only run in one semester each year and most of them only one lecture stream. For instance if I want to do accg329 this semester it clashes with econ350 and acst300 and nccw acst305. But the only other core is fin310. On the other hand if I skip 329, then in 2nd semester cant do accg352. That only leaves accg353, which is a shocker from all reports.

So anyway what im saying is get on top of core units early. Theres plenty of time for electives. But some suggestions are accg201, also phil137 or phil264 or anything outside of efs is good because usually mostly essays and less pressure at exam time.

Also accg253 is pretty challenging and important too because you will need what you learn there for lots of later finance units. My biggest mistake was just cruising thru that subject, not really taking much in just enough to pass.

Ah, so I should try to do 300 lvl core units instead? Because I was checking out the handbook online, and notice that all the 200 lvl cores except ACCG253 are in semester 2. Well ECON200 is S1 but I was planning to take ECON201 instead.

And I can't do ECON350 yet because I haven't complete ECON201 either. So I'm not really following how I can start 300 lvl core when I haven't complete the 200 cores yet. I could start on the 300 lvl cores in semester 2 though right?

Should I do both ECON200 and 201? I wasn't planning on it because they're 4cp each and they seem quite of tough with a lot of work/reading.

PHIL264 is a s2 elective as well, accg201 seems interesting but prereq is accg200 and I haven't done that. :( ... Btw, is Econ235 a good elective choice? Anymore suggestions?

re econ200 vs econ201. I was in same position as you it seems. Really preferred macro in first year but did micro (ie 200) anyway so that I could do 335 and 360 in semester 2. I ended up doing 201 even though not necessary after 200. Youre right to think a lot of work. I wouldnt do both if I were you. I would do 200 semester 1 so that you can do some 3rd yr in semester 2, but thats just me. Also econ335 and 360 are pretty easy. I mean theyre much easier than 200 and 201, which probably sounds strange but everyone says the same. So even though you might technically be a 2nd yr students, you should be fine with them if you decide to do them in semester 2.

I havent done econ235. and when i did accg201, 200 was not a prerequisite. All my other electives are from philosphy and english so cant really recommend much else to you.

Hey, just wondering, is ACCG353 THAT bad?? I got a distinction in 253 and I've enrolled in 353 for next sem so I wouldn't have to do 352.

I've downloaded the lecture slides for 353 and had a good look at it, and to me it doesn't look too bad.

but if 353 is really that hard then i'm gonna have to rethink in enrolling in 352...

hey,
Math, if u got a D in 253, probably u should do ok in 353.

BUT, I dropped out in week 4 last semester because:

1) the 2 lecturers who spoke to us said it was currently considered the hardest accg unit,

2) both lecturers said the text was one of the hardest finance texts, and usually used in post grad units.

3) I understood almost nothing in the lectures,

4) the tute work took seriously several hours a week (for instance, we had to download and fill in a 'tutorial template' that was about 25 pages by week 3)

On the other hand, ACCG353 follows on 253, so if u did well in 253 maybe u will have no problems in 353. But 353 is the only EFS (or whatever they call themselves now) unit that I know of where u only need 40% in the final exam to get a pass. So obviously its a hard course for them to make that concession.

thanks for that, by the way do you know anything about 352?? this unit also looks interesting but kinda refrains me from doing it coz of the pre-final assessments..

@zeromq: yeah I'll try to pick STAT for electives if I can :p

Hmm as I'm still thinking for an elective, but you bring a good point Adam. I was planning to do 201 because I did better in 110 than 111. But for this, is 200 harder or 201?

I am seriously taking your advice into consideration. It makes sense to do 200 now and then level 300 cores in sem 2. That's one option I'm thinking of doing, but I've heard from some friends that 200(micro) is harder than 201(macro).

The other option is I do an elective such as accg200 or some non-efs elective and then do econ201 in sem 2. This seems like the less attractive option, but I need to get this 200 vs 201 problem out of my head asap!

and accg200 is fkn hard. its just fkn hard.

Yeah, I think it's wise to do econ200 for now, gives me more options in sem 2 and 3rd year.

Is it really that hard? Because I'll stay away accg200 and accg201 if I can..

I heard from a friend that accg352 and harder than 353, and it seems to me 353 is more useful practically.

I just hope ECON200 isn't too hard or much harder than 201...
