To all those interested in lessons, please let me know by email much.bobness@gmail.com.

Typically, i only respond to my mobile if it is a known number, and will reject any calls during lesson time. However, interest expressed through sms is fine.

Thanks in advance.

Bump!

Edited:

Bob is extremely committed to me Engrish (lulz) whilst also being a helpful counsellor :) He's caring, serious and sarcastic as well. My overall half yearly rank in Advanced English was very low (a really embarrasing rank that Bob doesn't even know about ), and since applying for his service, I have:
  • Attained 18/20 in a highly weighted speech (rank 2).
  • Scored high ranks in english tasks going towards my grades (recently came 1st).
  • Received a harshly marked listening task on Victorian society that Bob believes I should've received a higher mark. An elevating ranking still :).
  • And hopefully, I'll achieve an excellence award overall in Advanced English with a high preliminary final exam result.
The reason why I mentioned 'a helpful counsellor' is that he recommends me on what subjects to drop for the HSC, how many hours of study I should be doing a day, providing me with tutoring colleges to join etc. It is evident that he's excellent in English, scoring HD's in his prestigious arts/law degree . I'd highly recommend him!

Update: Came 6th in my final preliminary exam, a major improvement from my half yearlies since being with Bob :)

I will reply to those Year 11 students who have contacted me / been on my waiting list / trialled or organised a trial lesson with me from this Sunday 28th September.

Presently i am in the middle of completing a major research paper, and helping the 2008 HSC cohort with final preparations for their external exams.

Thank you for your patience.

Also: i have moved my premises to Eastwood 2122. For those who live in the surrounding Strathfield / Carlingford / Epping region, you may find this centralised location easier to get to :) I can also hold lessons at UNSW (Kensington).

At present, i have only 2-3 more slots for 2009 HSC students due to the sheer number of requests, so let me know asap if you wish to have an experienced tutor to tackle the new english advanced and extension syllabus with.

edit: Hi jessi90, didn't want to type up a new post because i don't think it is very significant, but my UAI from many years back was enough for me to study my desired course right now. I also believe i mentioned it in one of my older threads, but the exact increment escapes me at present.

Also, i notice you are a 2008 HSC student, so you must be asking out of curiosity :) All i can add then is good luck for the HSC, and hope you achieve your desired UAI

Thank you for the kind words x.Exhaust.x but I should add 'embarrassing' has two 's's and 'elevating' should actually be 'elevated'; though your satirical impetus to initiate your prose was nicely controlled and understated. Remember the techniques you have since learnt

Also I have updated my original post to include two new details (though I addressed this in an earlier post).

1) My new premises is in Eastwood 2122 about a 10 min walk from the station. If you are looking for a teacher/tutor out west (where I once operated) I have a couple of recommendations if you would politely ask me, including an English Major / Law peer at UNSW :) Hi Kunal!

2) I have roughly two places left for tutoring for 2009. If you are studying standard english, I have decided I will only take in one for 2009 like in 2008, so please contact me if you wish to be challenged all the way in fulfilling your potential in the one HSC subject that must be counted.

As present students can attest to, I have the most updated resources for Belonging (all texts) and Frankenstein / Bladerunner (or other Module A combinations for those who are starting with this in term 4 2008) from the ETA. They address syllabus points more insightfully than the study guides which were printed (circa August 2008) before the final say was had behind the scenes, recently. :D

Sorry, no offence - I know you've got a fantastic academic record, particularly in English, and are probably a great tutor, as everyone says you are...

But isn't it just a little misleading to be saying that about your UAI when you got into your current Laws course by transferring in second year?

he means it was enough to get him into the course, the means by which isn't specified. so technically correct but misleading nonetheless. a bit like your average telemarketer

Dear Enobarbus,

Thank you for your compliments.

To address the second point of your post, I would like to take a step back and respectfully call into question your (juvenile) fixation upon ‘transparency’ that you have spoken at length in the past. While it is generally an honourable pursuit, I should remind you that unless you fully understand the good-hearted intentions or potential for possible misrepresentation by others (for eg in relation to Ruse HSC exams and the media storm we are now witnessing) it will bite you in the proverbial backside.

But I digress. Anyway, to clarify your question I would like to return the favour with rhetoric. Why do you assume that Law is my “desired course”? Also, are you saying that I did not score above a 76 UAI? Because that is the required UAI for my true “desired course” – UNSW English (and would be as low as 71 UAI after the HSC bonus points scheme: I encourage all those interested to pursue it, the academics are superlative here!).

I don’t think I can adequately express my genuine passion for the study of literature, creative practices and the foundations of our common language in this truncated dialogue. As my students would corroborate, the metaphorised Muse of English enters into my heart and mind on a daily basis, and there is not a moment that I am not pondering the implications of Kristeva’s theory of abjection in relation to the construction and deconstruction of the subject; the Byronic hero Satan in Paradise Lost as a precedent for Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights; or the intersection of time, space, gender, sexuality, Modernist self and other in Woolf’s trans-gender / trans-genre Orlando (the latter of which I am willing to speak to you at length as I understand that you find the term ‘other’ endearing).

You may argue that I am being hyperbolic and unnecessarily self-indulgent at this point but I, respectfully, perceived your original post as along these same lines :)

Also it may interest you to know that I am most likely not pursuing Laws after English honours (I have accelerated so to speak in pre-Honours courses this year). While I was hoping to keep this secret, I guess your eternal pursuit for transparency has forced my response. I hope you are satisfied with the premature announcement.

Best,

Bob

p.s. So as to not incur the wrath of forum mods, please email me if you wish to further discuss UAIs which really does not mean anything once you enter university (esp. in regards to prospective tutors/teachers). I believe it reflects the adverse philosophy of HSCers – not only yourself – when they define Others by an arbitrary number.

Sincerely though, I wish you the best of luck with your HSC results, and hope your school can still 'top it like it's hot' :)

Err... I really don't get what your misleading advertising has to do with the jrahs mx1 media storm-in-a-teacup.

I assume you're proficient in understanding how deliberate selection and emphasis lie at the heart of representation, in swaying a responder.

You didn't only say "desired course". You said your UAI was "
enough for me to study my desired course right now". And when you have your current uni course that you're studying in your sig - BA/LLB at UNSW - you obviously seek to have people believe that is what you mean by "desired course right now". And a reasonable person would conclude that it means you got at least 99.30.

I'm not saying you lied. I'm just saying, that in the mind of a reasonable person, what you said was phrased in a way that was likely to mislead.

Thanks, but no thanks. I know you're trying to set up smoke and mirrors to deflect the issue at hand, but it's not working.

My original post was short and to-the-point, and most importantly, based on a commitment to doing the right thing. Yours is not.

True that - UAIs do not suffice to represent a person's whole academic ability and skills. I have never said anything to the contrary, so don't try to misrepresent what I believe.

Accordingly, why should you have to deliberately mislead a potential client as to your UAI? I think your excellent tertiary academic record in English - as advertised - speaks for itself.

I think it shows only your preoccupation with the UAI when you try to have us believe you got 99.30+ in order to validate yourself.

Hi James: I won’t try to respond to your entire post here because I am firstly overseas in Polynesia (the internet is a bit unstable here and costs a fortune!) and secondly I don’t think you understood completely the premise of my earlier reply.

I will try to PM you a more detailed response later but let me take the time out to wish you the best of luck with your own 2008 UAI and sincerely hope you get into USYD Law (I noticed your posts about this earlier this year and would have responded with advice but it has since been either deleted or hidden away as I cannot find it!).

To all 2008 students, I would like to communicate to you (if I have not already) that I am presently overseas in Polynesia (since last week) and will not return to Sydney until this Sunday Dec 21. As my mobile range is limited to non existent here, for those who have tried to call or sms me, please email me if you want to let me know how you went in English particularly in your externals. So far 5 of you have scored marks ranging from 90 to 94 in the HSC :)

Again, best wishes with all for their UAIs and a quick message of congratulations also to my 2009 HSC students who have performed marvellously in their first HSC assessments.

I had a friend who was a student of yours. I shan't name him/her. They thought you were ordinary.

While not officially one of Bob's students, he has given me generous help over the past year! :) so here are my comments:

Bob is awesome. What a legend. And his love for English is only the more evident for his frequent use of puns and wordplay :p A really cool person (always 36.2 degrees celsius ahaha bob) and easy to get along with. Also, he has tons of cool resources and his impressive grasp of language means he can explain stuff really well :)

Oh, and he speaks with intertextual allusions in his everyday conversation haha =)

ps. at Ruse, no one takes Enobarbus (james sin) seriously. and neither should you. his views are usually retarded and are an offense to free speech
