There building a new BigW here in Geelong, and as the nearest one is hours away they will be looking at 100% new staff for everything, and its going to be a very busy store here in Geelong (400k people to one BigW).

1. Do you have to wear a tie
2. Do casuals get Sunday Shifts?
3. Would they employ me if I only want to work about 3 days per week
4. Are there departments to aviod??

I am going to apply, pretty sure Ill get the job (I beat 500 people to only 50 positions at Coles, and I have got all the Retail Tranishep crap etc..)

Just wanting some advice guys, as I dont want to go into somehting that Im not gonna like:burn:

1)Nah u dont need to wear a tie- thats way to formal. Just wear some black pants and a nice shirt.

2)Yea casuals get shifts on sundays.

3)Yeah they would employ u if u only work 3 days a week, but during holidays and stuff u will probably be needed to work more.

4) Bah, avoid anyjob dealing with customers and try to get one at the back or something.

Lol, u said that you dont want to go into something you dont like. Its retail. 100% of retail workers hate working in retail. Tis true

1. Are you talking about the interview? If so don't bother, you can even turn up in casual (I did anyway)

2. Yes

3. Depends what they need

4. If you hate dealing with customers, then do recovery, if you like customers then obviously checkout

Yeh, but they are soon changing the uniform for the better, no ties :p

Entertainment section might be a bitch to work in esp during xmas/cd/dvd sales, it gets hell busy but then usually its quiet.

I can guarantee you, you will get a lot of customers who get angry because we don't put the game/dvd/cd in the cases on the shelf, and they have to wait to get the cd/dvd/game from you. You'll understand when you start working there

hey yeah males do wear ties as part of their work uniform
you will be employed on sundays

word of advice though:
pay is crap, if you get put on a part time contract: pay goes way down, depending on age too though.

depends what you are though most school kids get classified as recovery which basically means you clean and make sure your section is neat
it is sooooo boring. normally when you are recovery you get 3 hour shifts on nights about 5-8 pm, thurs different. depends how long your store is open.
night fill stock shelves (at night :)) dont really work with customers, recovery generally without customers only a bit of your shift, and then theres the floor staff and checkout operaters who do work with customers. unless you specialise in something ie layby, photo lab, entertainment (like you said) or cosmetics.

hope that helps a bit

Cool, I noticed that they "spiced" up their logo, as the company branding etc was gettng a bit behind the times. As this store is opening Mid-July, do you think the new uniforms will be out by then. Customers can get as angry as they want with me, Cause I have learnt not to take shit from customers:hammer:

Yeah...

u have to wear ties...
Im a casual and I only work Sundays..so that answers your next question as well... and I would avoid:
CHECKOUTS/COSMETICS!!...hate them!
recovery is good (crappy 3 hrs a day though)...hard work in apparel though
Home entertainment is good - interesting/fresh and mixture of busy and not busy.
fitting rooms - nice and relaxing - you just sit there and read out things over the p.a

and the uniform thing...well apparently we were meant to get them in February...that never happened...still waiting on mine...

ask any other questions..

Wanting more questions then, mmm, OK:

1. Is there a group interview when applying, im a bit over them after coles
2. Good to see that Casuals get Sunday Shifts (Im getting a second job, cause coles seems to like putting part timers on Sunday and Pub Hols:vcross:
3. Whats the average Shift length
4.What would a 18year old casual get on weekdays, weekends
5.When applying, do they base it on Availability??? (cause im only goind to say Mon, Fri, Sun(what do you guys say at your interview?)

I cant think of anymore for you, so this will do

1. umm i applied ages ago..and i had an orion survey then a one-on-one interview..but for a new store they might have group interviews.

2. yeah...I work only Sundays, they are good to me.

3. Shift length depends where you work. Checkouts 4 hrs, fitting rooms 4 hours, home entertainment 5 hrs, recovery 3 hrs...floor staff u could get all day or just recovery (3 hrs)...i dont know about night fill..layby maybe 5 hrs?? im not sure...around 5 hrs for a casual...

4. 18 year old casual..$13 an hour? so Sunday: $19.50?? not too sure

5. yeah..i think availability comes into it..like where you will be put - what department. Just put anything, you can always change it with the availability form..I would look more available then u actually are.

Good point Ellie-Maye, I might put down 4 days, and change it to 3 some time. What area do you work in??

1. Yeh but I hardly said shit in the group interview except for contribute mainly in a critical task they make you do (ordering what priorities are most important)

2. I don't do sundays or weekends for that matter, gets way too busy

3. Depends, 4 to 5 hours, they hardly give you more than 5

4. They would get $13, for sundays you get 18$

5. When you are doing your interview say as much days as you can work, then after if you get employed change it lol

I was waiting for a stupid answer like that, and no I dont think I would want to ask them at 8pm on a Public Holiday, with no store in a 2hour radious of me and only have time to apply tonight. The guys on here are much more informative and we are all one big community. Also people on here can tell me about experiences and other things that BigW wont. I dont think id have the guts to call them anyway haha

um..they kind of suggest areas at the beginning...

but i mean..i think u would have a say in where u want to go since it's a new store and you get placed in one area and then you can ask to move.

I started on checkouts, did checkout recovery then moved to apparel recovery then moved to fitting rooms. I'm also doing like half a sunday in home entertainment... i do random stints in like cosmetics, layby, home, leisure etc
