... and now here are the solutions and marks for the Mathematics Extension 1 BoS trials!

Similar to Mathematics Extension 2, please note that the question paper has been updated (which the solutions are aligned to) with some minor adjustments to a few questions. The updated file is attached in my original post of the papers to replace the older version.

Congrats to the top student who scored 47 out of 70, followed closely by marks of 43 and 41 in second and third place respectively!

Once again to remind everyone:
Note: These are not your average trial papers. These papers are heavily skewed towards the more challenging questions (i.e. filtered out most of the boring/repetitive easy stuff in a typical trial paper). Students who may be worried about losing motivation after attempting the paper are reminded that this is NOT intended to be an accurate reflection of the difficulty of the HSC exam itself.

Congrats to the top student who scored 85, followed very closely by 83 in second place!

Once again to remind everyone:
Note: These are not your average trial papers. These papers are heavily skewed towards the more challenging questions (i.e. filtered out most of the boring/repetitive easy stuff in a typical trial paper). A big thank you once again to everyone who sat the Business Studies paper! I hope you guys picked up on some of the hidden references! 😜

This year, I marked Section II. Issues this year were mostly related to response depth, content accuracy and time management:
  • Depth: Some responses lacked sufficient depth that would be consistent with a higher mark. This was especially the case of questions with a higher mark allocation (5 and 6 mark questions). While most responses did identify and cover relevant/appropriate concepts, students need to consider the depth aspect across all aspects of their responses, including definitions, analysis and examples.
  • Content accuracy: There were some instances where responses covered a concept(s) other than the one(s) that a question assessed. This can be problematic and presents a risk to students' marks if not addressed. It is therefore important to ensure that you revise the content of the HSC course and thoroughly know the syllabus, allowing you to correctly identify the relevant syllabus dot point(s) that a question assesses. Note that some marks were awarded where significant effort was made and where a response partially satisfied some criteria.
  • Time management: There were numerous instances of no responses and incomplete responses. This can indicate a time management problem. At the same time, the problem may have only occurred within this specific paper, given its length and difficulty compared to standard Business Studies trial and HSC exams. This means that you may not necessarily experience this problem again in the HSC exam, although I still want to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the importance of ensuring effective time management. This is not only applicable to Business Studies, but also to every other subject. There is a chance that these instances of no responses and incomplete responses are linked to insufficient knowledge and understanding of certain areas of the content as opposed to time management. If this is the case, it is important for students to address any areas of improvement regarding the content.

Um, I do have a question.
I did not sit the bos exam, but given there is 2 days as of tomorrow until business, hypothetically how would one prepare if lack of study was achieved???

(Asking for a friend :)

I would like to extend my gratitude to all the students who sat the Business Studies BoS exam this year. Great results achieved by many students! (Good luck to you all for your remaining exams!)

I was given the opportunity to mark & provide feedback for Section III & Section IV (as follows):

Section III
  • Students were required to explain the interdependence between each business function of Quality Roads (QR) specifically operations, marketing, finance and human resources. Some students misinterpreted the idea of interdependence, which requires students to discuss how each business function are interconnected with one another in a two way format. (i.e once a student has discussed operation’s interdependence with finance, marketing and human resources they should go on to then do the same with marketing and its connection with finance, operations and human resources and the same for the remaining KBF). Further, when a student writes about how operations relies on finance, then they are also required to write about how finance relies on operations in the respective paragraph. Moreover, students should try to incorporate the specific products and scenario of QR (and any stimulus) within this interdependence (this was done in better responses). Some responses also defined the KBF before explaining the interdependence, which is acceptable.
  • This report aimed to assess the ability of students to explain the significance of at least three of the performance objectives (cost, dependability, flexibility, speed, quality, customisation) as operations strategies to ensure success for the business. In better responses there were: discussions of advantages and disadvantages between performance objectives, judgements of which performance objective is more important for QR and comparison between more than three performance objectives. It is advised that students do not forget to incorporate the stimulus in their response. Some responses effectively correlated these performance objectives to other relevant and appropriate operations strategies in relation to business success (although students were not required to do this, it was explained in some responses).
  • The implementation, monitoring and controlling (IMC) question tried to encourage students to discuss developing financial forecast, comparing actual and planned results and revising the marketing strategy of QR. Some responses gave a general sketch of IMC, whereas higher responses were able to create a succinct flow by utilising ‘revising marketing strategy’ to emphasise the need of promotion strategies for QR (especially their repetitive promotion strategy). Promotion strategies varied in responses between advertising, personal selling, relationship marketing, sales promotion, publicity, public relations, opinion leaders and word of mouth. Some responses elaborated more on additional marketing strategies that could be coupled with the mentioned promotion strategies (elements of promotion mix and communication process). However, a few responses included e-marketing. E-marketing is defined as the practice of using the internet (social media, websites, web platforms etc) to perform marketing activities. This is not a promotional strategy but rather an environment where promotional strategies can be applied. Some responses used this as a ‘promotion strategy’ where they were not awarded marks as this was not conjunct with another promotion strategy.
  • Benchmarking key variables, accidents and worker satisfaction fall under indicators of human resources. Most students addressed each indicator individually, however some related used benchmarking key variables as title and briefly explained it. Most responses were able to outline issues related to QR mainly that it was in a production industry hence many responses highlighted the importance of HRM to pay close attention to workplace and potential issues in the production process.
Section IV
  • A few responses were had low time management where only two pages were presented for marking
  • Some responses failed to correctly identify the appropriate syllabus dot points for some of the questions (i.e talking about marketing with finance for Question 31 instead of operations and finance)
  • Handwriting was also another key issues amongst various responses which can tend to make it hard for the marker to appropriately mark response.

Um, I do have a question.

2 days is less than ideal to prepare for the Business Studies HSC exam. However, some decent preparation can still be done. I would recommend the following approach:
  • Learn the syllabus
  • Revise the content using a concise set of notes
  • Ensure that you know case study information that you can apply across topics (real-life and/or hypothetical)
  • If possible, i.e. if you still have enough time, attempt at least one past HSC exam.
