Why dont you go to WebCT to get it? Or did you do it in Autumn? Either way, I think Ive still got it. Heres the bits that are easy to copy+paste:

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this unit, students will be able to:

· Examine the changed nature of the workplace and its environmental constituents, and evaluate recent approaches to management.
· Analyse the essential managerial competencies required by contemporary managers.
· Consider the relevance of early management theorists to contemporary practice.
· Assess the value of information in decision-making and how decision-making is affected by risk.
· Investigate the managerial functions of planning and control and develop an understanding of the constraints ethics and social responsibility place upon managerial behaviour.
· Evaluate the various ways organisations are designed and the impact of entrepreneurship on organisational management.
· Differentiate between the concepts of leadership and management and explain the role of motivation within the function of leadership.
· Investigate the need for managers to possess superior communication skills and the part communication plays in change management.

Student workload
For a 10-credit point unit students are expected to work an average of 10 hours per week. As your class time totals 3 hours per week, you are expected to work an average of 7 hours per week out of class.

Mode of Delivery
2-hour lecture and 1-hour tutorial, supplemented by student assessment exercises and library/internet research.

Attendance Requirements
You must attend at least 80% of your scheduled tutorials to pass the unit. This means in a standard thirteen week semester you may only miss 2 tutorials without evidence of misadventure. Attendance rolls will be taken at least twice during tutorials so that absences, late arrivals and early departures will all be noted.

Non-attendance for whatever reason will almost certainly result in poor understanding of the concepts and subsequent poor marks. Instances of illness or misadventure that prevent a student attending a tutorial should be supported with a medical certificate or other documentation.

If you have an ongoing problem that is affecting your attendance, notify your tutor as soon as this arises.

Tutorials
There will not be tutorials in Week 1 of the semester. It is your responsibility if absent and an assignment is due, to arrange for the work to be handed in on time. Tutorial class rolls will be kept. Please bring your text book and Tutorial Guide to each tutorial.

Students are required to attend their designated tutorial each week. Tutors will expect students to have prepared for their tutorial by having read the assigned textbook chapter(s) and completed any preparation of assigned activities.

Essentially tutorials are designed for students to:
i) Review and reflect upon concepts delivered in lectures and seek clarification of any issues.
ii) Apply theoretical knowledge to workplace related scenarios.
iii) Develop peer-centred learning skills through interaction with other students. A tutorial is not a one-way learning situation, but instead should focus on learning from other students’ experiences and ideas. The tutor acts as a facilitator for learning.

In general, once enrolled, you will not be permitted to change tutorial groups unless formal agreement is obtained from the tutor and unit coordinator. If tutorials are shown on PlatformWeb
(www.uws.edu.au/students/stuadmin/tut_reg) as “full” it means that NO MORE STUDENTS may join these tutorials. You will not be able to change tutorial groups after Week 2.

Essential Equipment/Resources
Prescribed textbook. The textbook must be brought to tutorials. Tutorial Guide (posted on WebCT to be printed by student).

Lectures and Notes
Each week there will be 2-hour lectures delivered on the three campuses this unit is being run. The lectures will cover the topics and text chapters listed in the lecture sequence (Page 7). While condensed lecture notes will be placed on WebCT, it is important to realise that such abridged notes do not replace attendance at lectures. Generally, the notes do not offer full explanations of the unit material. They are offered as a guide to the session and a starting point for supplementary note taking. Students should attend the lectures to get a comprehensive understanding of unit concepts. To gain a critical perspective of the unit and encourage, lectures may also contain material and examples not covered in the prescribed text or lecture notes.

Student Consultation
Tutors are generally available by phone or email, and before and after class. The lecturers and tutors will be in close contact with the co-ordinator throughout the semester and will refer the student enquiry to the co-ordinator where appropriate.

Generally, if you wish to discuss this unit please contact your tutor in the first instance. If this does not resolve the query please contact your lecturer before contacting the coordinator or your course advisory team.

Communication Procedure
Please note that UWS policy require students to use their student email only in all correspondence with staff.
Students are required to regularly access the WebCT Bulletin Board for announcements, lecture materials, quizzes and relevant unit information. Students can also post enquiries via this site. It is expected that students check WebCT bulletin board at least once weekly: http://elearning.uws.edu.au . The email facility will also allow messages to be sent directly and confidentially to each student and must also be checked weekly.

Students will have automatic access to WebCT once that are enrolled in this unit. If there is difficulty accessing WebCT, students should contact the e-learning staff by completing the Help Form (http://apps.uws.edu.au/learning/webct/forms/help_student.htm).

Learning Support for Essay Writing and Academic Skills
The University Learning Support Unit (LSU) offers free university preparation programs during the semester. The Spring workshop program includes an Essay Writing Series (essay structure, academic writing skills, referencing skills) and a Study Skills Series (assignment preparation, critical thinking, managing exams). Other topics include Reading Skills and weekly one-hour Grammar and Writing Skills classes. These workshops are available on all campuses from Week 2. Some topics are available on weekends as well as throughout the week.

Individual and group consultations are also available through the LSU. LSU lecturers cannot help you with the content of your assignment, as they do not have specialist disciplinary knowledge of the unit. They can help you with academic skills and language but you are responsible for researching the content.

Please see information regarding individual/group consultations, and workshop timetables online at http://www.uws.edu.au/about/adminorg/academic/ods/lsu. A link is also provided on the WebCT site for this unit.

Item 1. Academic Essay
2000 words (+ or – 10%)
Due Week 7 Beginning 5th September, 2005

Aims and Objectives
The essay aims to develop students’ research and analytical abilities. It also assesses students’ understanding of theory, concepts and issues articulated within the course framework.

Essay Question
Students are required to submit a hard copy essay to the tutor at the beginning of the tutorial on the following topic. Students are expected to draw on relevant academic sources and may provide organisational examples to illustrate their arguments.

Note: Please refer to the essay-marking guide contained in this outline for essay criteria details (Page 19). Students will need to upload an electronic copy of their essay onto WebCT by 9pm of the day they submit the hard copy essay. Ensure you both upload and click the ` submit’ button on the `Essay Submission’ page.

Essay Topic:
Using your knowledge of concepts covered in the course, for example Historical Foundations of Management, or any other relevant lecture topics, critically analyse the following statement:

Why is the study of management theory important for a manager in today’s business environment?
Evaluate this issue in the context of three (3) of the major schools of management thought (as outlined below).

The task: Describe how scientific, or administrative, or bureaucratic management (choose one of these) may currently affect organisational philosophies and practices. Choose two of the following approaches: human relations, systems, contingency or quantitative and critically evaluate whether or not each of these approaches would be more effective in improving an organisation’s competitive advantage in the 21st century.

Essay Requirements

Presentation
Ø Please present your assignment professionally using an essay format (a synopsis is not required). Highest marks will be given to those essays which address the essay question in a logical, coherent manner following standard essay development - i.e., introduction, body (argument) and conclusion. See the recommended book by Summers and Smith for advice on what constitutes an essay, or consult a helpful website such as http://aps.eu.rmit.edu.au/lsu/resources/projects/essay/index.html. Obtain advice from your tutor if in doubt. The Learning Support Unit (details on Page 4 of this outline) is also available to assist students with essay formatting.
Ø You need to attach two things to the front of your essay before submission. A Cover Sheet should be attached as the first page, and a Marking Guide must be attached as the second page (a sample Cover Sheet and a Marking Guide are contained as Appendix A and B in this outline, Pages 18 and 19. They will also be available on WebCT to download). The Marking Guide provides students with clear criteria for the essay. Please read this guide carefully before commencing your assignment.
Ø You may use a few headings throughout your essay if you wish, but not too many as this is not a report.
Ø An original word-processed copy is to be submitted. A copy is to be kept by the student.
Ø Be typed in size 12 Time New Roman or size 10 Arial or equivalent, double-spaced or one-and-a-half spaced.
Ø Provide a generous margin for comments. Use only one side of A4 paper, number every page, and staple in top left-hand corner. Please do not use folders or plastic packets. These will not add to your marks, they will be discarded and are hence a waste of your money.
Ø Information that is not vital to the essay discussion/argument should be put into an Appendix at the end of the essay. Marks will be deducted for irrelevant information – for example: graphs, tables, pictures, etc. – that is included in the essay body but which is not essential to the essay but simply additional or interesting information which belongs in an Appendix.
Ø Marks will be deducted for poor presentation (see above), poor spelling, poor punctuation and poor sentence structure, incorrect/inconsistent referencing, and under- or over-exceeding word limit by more than 200 words.

Referencing and the “Reference List”
Referencing is the practice of telling readers where you obtained the information or ideas cited in your piece of written work. By referencing your work, you are clearly indicating which ideas are yours and which should be credited to someone else. The Harvard System must be used in this unit, not footnotes. We strongly advise you to learn and use the Harvard System to avoid being accused of plagiarism (see “Academic Misconduct” page 16). Please refer to Summers and Smith for the correct formatting of references, or go to the web address: http://www.library.uq.edu.au/training/citation/harvard.html.

You must learn how to reference “in-text” and use a reference list at the end of your assignment.

Ø In terms of the “Reference List”, a reference is a book or article that has been referred to in the essay. DO NOT provide a bibliography – that is, a list of readings which have not been referred to in the essay. It is expected that each essay will directly source at least eight (8) academic references, considered to be journal articles or monographs, books, or refereed materials in general, as sources. Your prescribed textbook may be one of these but doesn’t have to be. It is expected that students will expand on information provided in texts and not simply repeat what is already there.
Ø DO NOT rely on non-academic journals/magazines, etc. (Eg. Newspaper articles, organisation’s web pages etc). Although they may be relevant and used very effectively in your essay, they will not be considered as part of your minimum requirement of eight academic sources. There are many journals (including on-line journals and articles) on general management, human resource management and organisational studies to assist you. Seek advice from the library staff and attend the library tutorials in this unit for information about referencing research methodologies. You will find Factiva particularly useful for organisational information.
Ø You can count as many web or electronic references as you like towards the minimum requirement, as long as they are academic articles and not, for example, one person’s/organisation’s viewpoint.

Essay Standards: Essay results will fall into one of five categories
High Distinction- 85%-100%. Excellent: Answers all aspects of question. Tight sustained arguments. Clear understanding of theory, concepts and issues. Logically consistent analysis well articulated within the analytic framework presented in the unit. Clear identification of and focus on the most critical aspects of the situation being analysed. Synthesis carefully reflects results of key analyses presented. Well-structured discussion, carefully written, adequately documented, persuasively argued, with effective selection and presentation of supporting data. Appropriate reference to relevant sources (and an absence of references not clearly relevant to issue being discussed).
Distinction- 75%-84%. Answers all aspects of the question. Analysis developed within the analytic framework presented in the course. Very good identification and discussion of critical issues. Synthesis based on analyses presented. Organisation of discussion is clear, argument is persuasive, documentation and supporting data are appropriate to discussion. Referencing is accurate and appropriate.
Credit- 65%-74%. Answers most aspects of the question very well. Work of good quality showing more than satisfactory achievement. Analysis invokes analytic framework developed in the unit, with limited conceptual errors or shortcomings. Referencing is generally very good.
Pass- 50%-63%. Adequate structures and a satisfactory effort. Analysis shows some knowledge of analytical framework developed in the unit, but there may be some logical gaps in the analysis. Limited but adequate references and sourcing. Critical aspects of situation are addressed, but at times not clearly identified as such. Arguments are adequate and generally show understanding of issues involved.
Fail- 49% and below. Analysis misapplies analytic framework developed in unit or unrelated to unit framework. Critical aspects of situation are not adequately addressed or identified. Synthesis has little or no relation to analyses. Could be descriptive rather than analytical. Discussion is hard to follow, internally inconsistent, and not at all persuasive. Shows little or no evidence of understanding of concepts covered in the course. A student may fail the essay if they have not referenced all material.

Item 2. Group Assignment (Case Study Report)
3500 words (+ or – 10%)
Due Week 11 Beginning 3rd October, 2005

Aims & Objectives
Ø The case study aims to assess your ability to systematically analyse, and help solve a real-world management problem. Ultimately, the purpose is to identify the most critical issues in the case and recommend appropriate actions to deal with them. The exercise will also facilitate students’ ability to work within a team environment. Groups are to consist of no more than 4 students.

Your Task
Go to the Annual Report file on the UWS electronic databases and select an organisation which has at least 3-5 years of annual reports available.
Suggested organisations include ABC Learning, Blackmores, Coca Cola Amatil, David Jones, Flight Centre, Qantas, James Hardie Industries, National Australia Bank and Southcorp (you may do another organisation only with your tutor’s permission).

Using these reports (above) provide the following information in the form of a Report

1. Explain the strategic management processes used in this organisation.

2. Provide three examples of the impact of each element of the general and specific environments of this organisation. Analyse the relevance of each element for the SWOT below.

3. Explain the importance of conducting a SWOT analysis. Conduct a short SWOT analysis for this organisation.

4. Using the core concepts of organisational strategies for growth and diversification and the basic variables contained in Porter’s generic strategies model, suggest an overall strategy for the organisation you have chosen.
Evaluate why this strategy will provide some form of competitive advantage for the future in the light of the SWOT analysis conducted above.

5. Explain how strategic leadership is important in this organisation?

An overview of case study skills is under the “Group Report” on WebCT.
Each student in a group will need to upload an individual electronic copy of their case study onto WebCT by 9pm of the day they submit the hard copy case study. Ensure you both upload and click the ‘submit’ button on the ‘Case Study Submission’ page.

Format of the Case Study Answer

Presentation and Referencing
The Case Study answer must:
Ø Be written as a report with appropriate headings (see Summers and Smith). Headings will include (but are not limited to): Executive Summary, Background, Analysis, Recommendations, Reference List, Appendices (if applicable).
Ø Be typed in size 12 Time New Roman or size 10 Arial or equivalent, double-spaced or one-and-a-half spaced.
Ø Number all sections sequentially using Arabic numerals (2, 3, 4 etc). (E.g. 1.Background; 2. Analysis (2.1.Strategy Process, 2.2 Environmental Analysis etc) (see Summers and Smith).
Ø Be printed on A4 paper with wide margins and be numbered on each page.
Ø Provide proper in-text referencing and a reference list in Harvard format. You are to utilise a minimum of 8 cited references (at least 4 of these references should be academic references as defined in the essay guidelines). This number does not include your textbook and can include both web based and hardcopy reference sources.
Ø Be handed in as ONE assignment per group.
Ø Be within the word limit of 3500 words (plus or minus 10%). Additional material is to be attached as an appendix, if required.
Ø Use only one side of A4 paper, number every page, and staple in top left-hand corner. Please do not use folders or plastic packets.

Other Information and Requirements

Ø A Cover Sheet should be attached as the first page, and a Marking Guide must be attached as the second page. (A sample Cover Sheet and Marking Guide are contained as Appendix C and D in this outline. They will also be available on WebCT to download). The Marking Guide provides students with clear criteria for the report.

Your report should contain the following:
Ø A title page.
Ø An Executive Summary (Approx. 1-2 page). The Executive Summary gives an overview of the background, analysis and recommendations. This should not simply be a dot point but should summarise the whole report.
Ø Table of contents
Ø A “Background” of the case in the context of the three (3) key management analytical frameworks.
Ø A “Critical Evaluation” This should include a justification of why you believe these are important issues. Within this analysis you must discuss related management theories, concepts, models that help to understand the case. Responses should briefly outline the theories/concepts chosen and relate them back to the case (ie. why and how are they relevant?). Examples or quotes from the case should link well with the theories chosen.
Ø “Strategic Recommendations” for competitive advantage. What are the recommendations made arising out of this case? This discussion should include a rationale for your recommendations.
Ø A “Reference list”.
Ø “Appendices” (if applicable).

Group Process Form

Group members will generally receive the same result for their report. However, marks may be altered for individuals if the Tutor deems, from group feedback, that one or more individuals have made a significantly lower contribution. Each individual team member can submit a “Group Process form” to his or her Tutor in Week 12 if problems arise within groups. This form is confidential and included as Appendix E (Page 22). However, in this instance, a form must be submitted by EACH team member.

Item 3. Final Examinations
a. Final Assessment Quiz, 20%, Completed on WebCT during final teaching week of semester
24/10/05 (9am) to 28/10/04 (5pm)

b. Formal Examination (Closed Book)
20%, 2 hours, Examination period 7th – 25th November

Aims and Objectives
To provide an opportunity for students to display breadth of knowledge and an integrative understanding of the course material. The exam will also test students’ insight of concepts and critical thinking ability.

Format
The examination at the end of semester will consist of two parts:

Part A: Quiz (20 Marks) Is to be completed online on WebCT
Ø In this section, students will be asked to complete 40 questions. Each question is worth a 1/2 mark.
Ø Practice Quizzes: There will be 10 multiple-choice questions for each lecture topic on Web CT. The exam questions may be in the same format (or could be true/false type questions) , but may cover different areas. Students can access the quizzes through the “Practice Quiz” icon on the unit’s Web CT page.

Part B:
Ø Short Answer Questions (20 marks). In this section you will be asked to answer 2 out of 6 questions. Each question is worth 10 marks.
Ø There is no “correct” length of answer- you will have an hour for each question. Make the most of your time. Quality will be rewarded over quantity.
Ø Students should try to be critical in their analysis, and not just reiterate textbook material.
Ø Each question covers one, two, or more topics in the course. These areas are not necessarily the same as those covered in the practice short-answer exam questions which will be provided throughout the semester.

Submission and Return of Assignments

Assignments are to be submitted to the tutor in hard copy form during scheduled tutorials. All assignments are to be uploaded onto WebCT the same day as the assignment is submitted. Marked assignments will be returned to students two weeks after the submission date. There will be no opportunity to re-submit assignments in the unit.

Late Submission

A student who submits a late assessment will be penalised by 10% per day up to 10 days, i.e. marks equal to 10% of the assignment's worth will be deducted as a 'flat rate' from the mark awarded. For example, for an assignment with a possible highest mark of 30, the student's awarded mark will have 3 marks deducted per late day. University policy requires that Saturday and Sunday each count as one day for this purpose. Where a student wishes to hand in a late assignment on the weekend, they should email their assignment to their tutor, as well as submit a hardcopy on the following Monday. Unless an extension has been granted, assignments received after marked assignments have been returned to students who submitted them by the due date will be awarded a zero mark. Such assignments may be counted towards satisfying the requirements that all assessments must be attempted.

Late assignments should be clearly labelled with your tutor’s name on the cover-sheet, and a hardcopy submitted to the School of Management office at your campus. Please notify your tutor of the late submission (make sure to attach a copy of your assignment) so that they can also collect the hardcopy. School of Management Locations are:
Parramatta- Building EI
Campbelltown- Building 17 Blacktown- Building U2 (place in marked box only)
Penrith - Building 1

Special Consideration
Students should notify the University when they have suffered misadventure, or have extenuating circumstances which means they have:
· been prevented from meeting an assessment deadline ( including essay and case study deadlines);
· performed below their usual standard during an assessment, including formal examinations;
· been unable to attend a compulsory component of their course;
· been unable to attend a formal (end-of-session) examination.

Students who wish to apply for and extension must submit a special consideration form to the Student Centre. The unit Coordinator will then decide if special consideration is to be granted. This is done on a case-by-case basis.

The University has specific criteria, requirements (eg supporting documentation) and set deadlines for applying for special consideration and students are strongly encouraged to read the relevant sections of the Assessment and Examinations Policy refer URL addresses below.

Section 3.1.2 - Matters Affecting Assessment
http://apps.uws.edu.au/uws/policies/ppm/doc/000022.2004.html and

Section 3.2.16 Inability to Attend an Examination
http://apps.uws.edu.au/uws/policies/ppm/doc/000022.2004.html#PH

1. Students should be familiar with all University and College/School rules, policies and processes, related to their studies and time at UWS. Students should also be aware that they are required to abide by the University's Codes, Occupational Health and Safety and Social Justice policies.
Information on University, student rules, policies, procedures and codes can be found in the UWS Student Handbook, and online at on the Student Administration Web page and the UWS policy and Procedures web page.

Students should regularly check the Student Administration Web page for up-dates, enrolment, timetabling and other related information.

The above information can be found online at:
www.uws.edu.au/students/stuadmin and http://apps.uws.edu.au/uws/policies/ppm/policies.phtml#STUD

2. Students with a disability are advised to discuss requirements for accommodation (including for examinations) at the commencement of the teaching session with their Unit Co-ordinator in conjunction with the Counselling & Disabilities Unit within the Office of the Dean of Students. This is a free and confidential service, contact no: 02 4620 3018 or refer:
http://www.uws.edu.au/students/counselling_disability/disabilityservices

3. UWS has a web page for students which contains links to the library, student support, including the free services offered by Office of the Dean of Students and other relevant information refer URL:
http://www.uws.edu.au/students

Academic Misconduct:
The University takes any form of academic misconduct seriously. Academic misconduct is conduct on the part of a student, which involves amongst other forms of misconduct:

· Cheating, Plagiarism and Collusion
For the full definition of academic misconduct and the consequences of such behaviour, students are advised to read the Academic Misconduct policy in its entirety, refer URL:
http://apps.uws.edu.au/uws/policies/ppm/doc/000051.html

Peer mentoring
Peer mentoring is offered in this unit and students are encouraged to participate in this program. Evaluations of the peer mentoring program at UWS have shown that through participation in the program students can gain better grades, are empowered as learners, network with their peers and gain a deeper understanding of their unit content.

Peer mentors are experienced students (2nd or 3rd years) who have successfully completed the unit that they are mentoring in. They have also completed an official two day training program run by Student Support Services. Peer mentors facilitate students’ learning in small groups. They are not a content tutor but rather resource persons who encourage students’ learning through group discussions and activities related to how to study in your field and specifically in the context of this unit.

Peer mentoring is about responding to students’ needs and areas of concern and helping make university a positive experience. The peer mentor will have ideas about what might happen in a session but it is also up to the group to determine the focus of the sessions. Contact Dr Jim Mitchell via email on WebCT if interested in joining a peer mentoring group (on a first come, first served basis only as spaces are limited).

Because some schools like their holidays :p You people are a little too eager. I'll be happy if I never see another unit outline again. They piss me off.

Prepared in Febuary is different than preparing in December. I dont like finding out about assignments early, they scare me, until the lecturer goes through everything :p

its good to know ahead of time though...especially since sometimes they're due week4...

so if you wait til week 3 to get books and all that - there's none there... largely coz people steal the books or rip out pages..

its just good to know when stuff's happening... also if you know what books you can find peopel ahead of time to con them into a good 2nd hand book sale deal:p
