What on earth does d/dx mean?

What the difference with dy/dx? Look at these questions and you'll see what I mean

d/dx is notation for the operation of differentiating w.r.t x. dy/dx is what you get if you apply this operator to a specific function y(x).

ie

"Find d/dx(blah)" means differentiate blah with respect to x.

Like for a function: y= 2x^3 + 4x^2 -7x + 9

What would d/dx be? That way it'll make more sense

d/dx has no meaning then. it is like having a square root sign with nothing inside it.

Attached is how you MIGHT set out the first question using d/dx notation. As stated before, d/dx is an operator meaning "the derivative of".
So d/dx (x^2) means "the derivative of x^2"

I think it might be good to revisit first principles of calculus (the limit stuff) where you'll see d (lower-case delta) actually mean something rather than just a notation.
