Should take a novice a couple of hours if they're switched on mentally.Only downside is, that it takes time to reinstall all your programs, and configure all your personal settings again. Shouldn't take more than a day though, if you motivated enough.
To the OP, is it possible to download AVAST from another computer, then put it on a USB thumb drive, and try and install it on the infected computer?
cheers mate youre a legendShould take a novice a couple of hours if they're switched on mentally.
Takes me 45 minutes without complications - but there's ALWAYS complications.
Refer to the link I previously posted above. It has step-by-step instructions and explanations for an entire re-format and re-install of an OS.
You have a deadly virus, just like I have now on my old computer. MalwareBytes is not an anti-virus real-time scanner unless you went for the Trial of their full product. Also I have this virus, where It wouldn't let AVAST update no matter what, even after scanning with MalwareBytes and AVAST itself. Found like 8-9 Trojan horses and backdoor viruses. It wouldn't even let me uninstall AVAST, so I had to restart and it eventually worked to uninstall it. I then downloaded a fresh copy of AVAST Free edition, install it and ran virus definition updates ASAP. It is now doing a "high" level heuristic boot time scan. IT may take awhile even though It's only a 40 GB HDD. The MalwareByte scan took 4 hours and 55 minutes for a Full system scan (found 9 viruses), a quick scan took 55 minutes (found an extra virus) and a flash scan took roughly 4 minutes (found nothing more).Okay so ive tried going back onto my computer and i think the virus is actually gone...i think the problem is being caused by having mcafee and malwarebytes on my computer...Cos neither of them open and anything that needs to be run as an admin doesnt work (even though i am the admin). I googled some stuff and came up with this on microsoft.com "Important: Before you install antivirus software, check to make sure you don't already have an antivirus product on your computer. If you do, be sure to remove the product you don't want before you install the new one. It can cause problems on your computer to have two different antivirus products installed at the same time."
Since i downloaded malwarebytes to run the scan i thought i should try uninstall it but when i click uninstall nothing happens and the same goes for when i try to uninstall mcafee
Yeahhh im pretty noob with computers so my mum said she would try reformatting it on the weekend. Why is the virus being such a bitch though? My girlfriend and another friend had the same virus..my friend said scanning his computer took ages but once it was done it was gone and my girlfriend said she had it for like a month and then all of a sudden it stopped occuringYou have a deadly virus, just like I have now on my old computer. These viruses kept turning off windows firewall upon every boot, so I used Ccleaner to disable and delete this oddly named start-up process. It now is stable. How ever it rendered IE 8 (highest on XP) as infected and some buttons would not go to their correct links, e.g on this banking site, it would not go to the next pop up screen, after clicking "Login". Firefox works fine though. The virus came from temporary internet files. I deleted all of them with cleaner. and cleaned the registry as well with ccleaner.
Note: This is not my primary computer. I'm fixing it up for someone.
But if this doesn't work, a fresh format and reinstall of the OS is recommended. (Also cleans out a lot of hidden junk that has built up over the 7 or so years) - This computer has only had it's OS installed twice within 11 years (so it's a pretty reliable computer).
Another one of my older computers had it's OS reinstalled roughly 40 - 50 times. it has 128 MB RAM and a 40 GB HDD also. When ever I used MCafee on it, it was so slow and used up more than 128 MB RAM so it had to page file (use the HDD as ram - very slow).
Now it's still boot time scanning.
Word of advice, Don't click shit your not sure of. Chances are it's going to be a virus you don't want. If you are noob at computers I recommend getting a automated anti-virus , internet security suite and cleaner such as Norton 360 (pretty good software package, with performance enhancements on it's latest versions). I don't recommend it for old shitty computers though, it will eat ur RAM and CPU power by just displaying the graphical user interface. (Out of all the retail security packages, Norton is probably the best out of Mcafee, Trent Micro, Kaspersky, despite Norton being known for resource as a resource hog, pre 2007). Symantec (company for Norton) is a company you can trust. My school uses endpoint Symantec security for their network.
NOD32 is the best internet security software suite I have ever seen, It's really efficient on resources and is very powerful in protecting your computer. Contains a firewall as well. It's cheap as well like $30 - $50 per year, but it's only available for online purchase.
I will update this thread as it finishes.
You may have not been protected as well.Yeahhh im pretty noob with computers so my mum said she would try reformatting it on the weekend. Why is the virus being such a bitch though? You said this before i downloaded malwarebytes but when i downloaded it it said i would have to turn off Mcafee so i chose not to use it...how stupid am i =(. But anyway i would do this now..However if i plug in a usb or CD the computer doesnt recognise it hence i cant open the files on the usb/CDYou may have not been protected as well.
Definitely download MSE while you've got the chance, and install it.
Well Apparently the boot-time scan found a worm virus, I tried to delete it by telling avast to do it, and about after the 8th try it actually worked, but the whole scan ended with it . So now I had to start the scan again.Yeahhh im pretty noob with computers so my mum said she would try reformatting it on the weekend. Why is the virus being such a bitch though?
