What about speech pathology? Do you guys reckon if we have another great depression or something my future job will be secure?

I'm not sure. How is the current demand for speech pathologists?

We won't hit another great depression. Honestly I don't see a huge need for speech pathologists now. I think in the near future we will see more health proffesionals than the system can/is willing to support, so it will be more important for you to out perform your peers (not taking a swing at speech path specifically, I just think health in general needs a clean out).

I have nfi about stuff that's going on in the world, and didn't know there was stuff circulating in the newspapers about the 'global economic crisis' until a fair while after it started.

re the health thing though, there are some professions where people are on waiting lists for maybe a year before they can get treatment. But I suppose half the issue there is lack government funding rather than a specific need for more staff. ????

@down in flames: I don't feel like going into a discussion regarding the healthcare system right now (and I'm sure no one wants to read about it), although it's a lack of funding/specialists AND people not utilizing the private system when they can.

Yah, Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Diversional Therapists, Physio's and other allied health positions all have good prospects if you read the government reports... don't underestimate the ageing population.

Its okay, I already have depression and I'm never getting married so that's at least two taken care of.

Apparently dentists have the highest rates of suicide.

Teaching, Nursing, Human Resources and anything Public Sector-ish.

Unless you get robots start taking over those jobs withing 10 years...

Oh well I reckon if you're willing to go rural you have much better chances of getting employment in the future.

Pretty sure most people pick degrees based on jobs rather than interest.
And I'm pretty sure a lot of the ones you listed as poor prospects actually have pretty good prospects

yes. if he's talking about australia, he's definitely wrong about there being poor job prospects for mechanical and electrical engineers...

just curious -- where did you get that list from? (or was it something you made yourself)

There's great opportunities for people with BSc/Med Sci in the clinical research industry (where I already work). There's a shortage of CRAs like you won't believe.

I saw this in the news last week;

Highest Demand jobs:
- ENGINEERING
- NURSING/MEDICINE
- EDUCATION

Jobs suffering with the economic crisis:
- FINANCE AND BANKING
- Most RETAIL (except in grocery, cause people still need to eat)
- MINING

I'm very disappointed myself; having suffered through 3 painstaking years of Accounting at uni and graduating in a few months, this means I will probably end up homeless.

Aside from suicide, depression and all the other issues that seem to be rampant within the psychology profession, psychologists also happen to be pathological liars. Seriously, if you knew this girl in person, you would realise that shes an absolute genius and if intelligence were proportional to light emissions, she wouldn't just be bright, she'd pretty much replace the sun.

Psychiatry is worse. Much worse. So I'm going into Psychology anyways, much less stress than any other of my options. Plus, there are always people who will need psychologists
