Note: I did not say Orbital altitude.

Last I checked the ansari X-prize competitors couldn't use government funding so they had to develop it.

India has actually had astronauts since the mid 80's.

There isn't much point in developing new launch vehicles when you don't need to.

There is a big, big difference between having an indian national go up on a us/russian space launch and an indian space program
Only 3 nations in the world have sent men to space by themselves. Better late than never.

Having your own space program means you can do things independently, go to space when you want, not when your host nation feels like it.

Go to space when you want?

Are launch windows for human exploration that crucial.

Much more could be achieved if they took say the avenue of the ESA.

Most likely India will put a man in space within say ten years. It is several years ago now that they successfully tested a locally designed satellite launch rocket.

They have wicked thoughts about colonising the moon, enriching their motherland with the lucrative cow-friendly cheese and clinging to control until the latter Star Wars sends them bust.

China learnt a lot from the previous launches by other countries, which made it relatively problem free.
China's successful launch of two taikonuats in its second manned space mission on Oct 12 tells the world a lot about how serious, formidable and well-prepared the Chinese space program is.

Some people like to reject the Chinese Space Program as stupid etc. On closer examination, it is actually a better conceived program than the US. Of course, China could benefit from the mistakes of the latter and that's the way it should be.
