how can a symbol of Gods love for the world offend ppl?.... if anything a number of Christians would be offended at how this time of the year is commercialised and baby Jesus in his nativity set is tossed aside....

ok so some ppl don't believe in Jesus... but they're happy to embrace SAINT Nick (more commonly known as Santa... who was inspired to do charitable works because of Jesus).... also its not like other religions are banned.... there's freedom here

i don't get why ban the nativity set when ur willing to celebrate the day with tinsel and crap

its sad... over 2000 years.... ppl still can't find room for Jesus and preoccupied with pointless shit

Jesus is everything... he enabled our souls to be saved through his death
... and even if u don't believe in him u can never disregard how he revolutionised the world.... everything has been influenced by him -even dates revolve around him

As we prepare for Christmas this advent, we wait for his second coming... Jesus will come again and then all shall see and know the truth

So many missing the point.... may everyone use this time to change and be better ppl, more compassionate and giving... striving for Gods kingdom and peace rule forever

LukeBennet you are correct the christmas tree itself has very un-christian origins - in fact it derives from German pagan tree worship which was amalgamated with christianity to become the christmas tree. It only really began to enter england around the napoelonic wars and Queen Victorias German Prince-Consort Alfred.

Narelle has it occured to you that you thinking that someone is going to go to hell and suffer eternal damnation unless they convert to your beleifs may be just a little offensive? You are essentially saying indeed shoving in tehir faces the simple statement: evrything you believe is crap, I am right you are wrong, chnage your mind or go to hell.

Wouldn't you be slightly offended or annoyed if somebody did that to you?

no im not saying that being catholic or christian leads means u wont go to hell... some ppl don't know "Jesus", but in actual fact they follow him more than believers, in their actions and in words -the way they manifest Gods love, -loving others (and in case some idiot comes along shifting the meaning of wat i just wrote... i dont mean sexual love, pure love)

the thing is... its just easier to follow him if u know about him

placing a nativity set does not "force" someone to convert,

its a display, -a way in which we celebrate... if ppl can celebrate consumerism with tinsel, surely ppl can respect believers by letting us have our nativity set...

its because of the nativity that any celebrations are goin on at all... and u may not realise but Christ has influenced almost every individual, directly or indirectly

i hope that clears thing up for u... im not "damning anyone to hell"

Fuck Honnakah. There's nothing offensive about Christmas except for the horrible music that accompanies it.

just wanted to add a couple more things:

yeah it pisses me off when automatically accused of "damning ppl to hell, condeming ppl"

.... wat the?.... just because i think christmas is being exploited... u just have to look around and see for yourself....

and plus, y would i want to condemn non-christians....i mean jesus himself didn't come into the world to condemn but save... he befriended sinners, prostitutes, tax collectors, pagans, gentiles... the forgiveness and love he offered them, set them free.

its not like ppl are forced to BOW DOWN before the nativity set each time they pass by it

Christmas is made a public holiday.... all these celebrations and things -its nice to see a small simple display to remind us of its original and TRUE meaning... surely that cant be too much to ask, in fact it deserves more if anything

Oh dear, Clover has become a stuck up cow.

Let me say, bloody fantastic of Johnny to stand up and say something. Christmas is SUPPOSED to be lively, fun and bright in Sydney.
How can she slap up a few banners and forget what Christmas is all about?!

Those people who say "stop spending money on Xmas decorations" obviously are very lonely and dread the fact that Christmas is coming up and they have no one to spend it with. It all draws deep within.

Christmas is SUPPOSED to be celebrated, no matter what you are celebrating it for, it doesn't matter! Who cares what some people believe we are celebrating, who cares what some other people think we are celebrating?!!
LET'S JUST FUCKING WELL CELEBRATE ANYWAY - It's fun, and it only comes around once a year!

BTW the daily tele is posting an apology to moore tomorrow. It seems she NEVER made the statement and that she is spending more than they did last year.

I would like to answer your quote with a different quote:
A spokesman for Ms Moore admitted there had been protests about it, but said it was all a misunderstanding.

"We have actually increased expenditure on Christmas this year," he said.

"We have about 200 ethnic groups represented in Sydney so we are encouraging people to celebrate Christmas how they want,'' he said.

"But we get both sides, with people saying we would expect more Christmas decoration and others ringing up saying 'don't go spending our rates on Christmas decorations'."

that doesnt even answer any of the issues posed by my post...

Moore never said the things reported in today's news.

She is actually spending more than last year on chrissy decorations.

People don't want their rates wasted (already 600 000 a year) on plastic decoration.

We dont live in a christian nation. the last time i checked the government and the constitution didnt designate any national religion.
People celebrate christmas in their own way. We dont need a million lights all over the city.
Did you read?

It was not her that said anything, but rather her spokesperson, I think you're a bit confused with this article.

Yes, she is spending more this year because last year was shit for Xmas decorations. I seem to remember having a conversation like this with people last year (not over BOS)

i remember when I lived inside the city 13 years ago when I was six years old, the city was so fantastically displayed in those days, I think Clover Moore is the worst Mayor we have had since I've been alive.

And I am not referring to Christmas Decorations, I don't think this is the best thread to start presenting ideas about why I think she is pathetic, but I'mn personally sick of her shit. Maybe I'll start a new thread and we can throw ideas around on her.

This is probably going to get me flamed, but Australians traditionally celebrate Christmas. If you come to this country (or are born here, whatever) under a different religion, you should be prepared to go with it. That doesn't mean you should support it, or agree with it, or whatever, but you shouldn't complain or try to get us to go against our traditions.

EDIT: just so you know, if I were to go to a country that is traditionally non Christian, I would still celebrate Christmas, coz its what I know, but I also wouldn't get my back up at the other people for celebrating whatever it is they celebrate.
true, if i went to another country i wouldn't expect them to change their traditions for me, i would realise they were doing their thing first and they can't accomodate for everyone

Major decorations are usually themed around "Happy Holidays" rather than "Merry Christmas" so as not to offend anyone.

On a side noe, did anyone see the decorations up at the White House? This year's gingerbread house is too tacky ...
