Ok so im a bit confused and i know some people here are doing combined degrees. The course outline says:

Bachelor of Social Science/Bachelor of Laws students are required to complete the following social science units:
20 credit point core comprised of 2 x 10 credit point units
40 credit points comprised of 4 x 10 credit point social science foundation units
A specialisation in Social Science of 80-120 credit points (may include the social science foundation credit points referred to above)

What are the 2 core units? Are they from your specialisation? I know the four social science foundation units are compulsory. But can you take compulsory units out of order and do electives instead, in the case of rotating units?

So if i were to do this in 2007:

Autumn
- Intro to Law
- Torts Law
- Crime and Criminal Justice
- Social Research Methods

Spring
- Criminal Law
- Law Foundation
- Crime and Criminology
- Psychological Aspects of Crime and Criminal Justice

Would that be appropriate and allowable? There are too many units I want to do!!!

Hi!

I understand that its all confusing for you and really its not very well explained.

You need to follow the social science/laws plan at:
http://handbook.uws.edu.au/hbook/course.asp?course=2538.2
You need to send off an email to Sharyn Mcgee who is the course coordiantor for social science to double check whether the info for yer 2 is correct- ie. research methods or Epistemological unit as it doesn't match the social science sequence.

However, below is more of my understanding of the social science outline.

But for social science you need to follow:
http://handbook.uws.edu.au/hbook/course.asp?course=1634.1

Most importantly you need to decide on your major now... because you will start completing units fom your major in year one unlike arts students.

Your plan for this year will comprise of the following units:
Year 1

Autumn session

Two social science units in selected specialisation

200006.1 Introduction to Law
200008.1 Torts Law

Spring session

Two social science units in selected specialisation
200007.1 Law Foundation
200010.1 Criminal Law

________________________________________________________

So you know what law units you are doing so thats not the problem. Its your social science units.
Over the first 3 years of your degree you will need to complete 16 units in total. 4 core units and 12 units that complete your major

There are 4 common core units that all Social Science students study and they are studied over three years.

They are:

Common Core Units

Year 1

101363.1 Global Structures and Local Cultures

Year 2

400337.1 Social Research Methods
101346.1 Philosophies of Social Sciences

Year 3

101301.1 Social Science in Action

In your major (I assume crimonology) you have 2 compolsury units to complete and 10 choices from a group or pool of subjects. They are:

Compulsory Units

400680.1 Crime and Criminal Justice
400681.2 Crime and Criminology

Pool Units

SC103A.1 Forensic Science
100996.1 Death and Culture
400074.2 Drugs and Criminalisation
400658.2 Policing in Australia
400674.2 Sociology of Power and Deviance
400679.2 Gender, Sexuality and the Law
101358.1 Crime and Society
101356.1 Psychological Aspects of Crime and Criminal Justice
LW211A.1 Law and Society (V1)
SS242A.1 Crime & Law
101369.1 Statistical Knowledge and Social Power
101005.1 Representing Crime
400299.2 Crime Prevention and Community Safety
101353.1 Programming in Correctional Environments
400678.2 Environmental Criminology and Public Policy
101332.1 Preventing Interpersonal Violence
101333.1 Sociology of Peace and Conflict
400684.2 Juvenile Crime and Justice
400685.2 Punishment
101337.1 Fear, Risk and Insecurity
101355.1 Intervention Strategies in Criminal Justice
101354.1 Victims of Crime

________________________________________________________________

So your Plan for social science/law with a major in criminology should be the following in the first year:

Year 1

Autumn session

101363.1 Global Structures and Local Cultures
400680.1 Crime and Criminal Justice
200006.1 Introduction to Law
200008.1 Torts Law

Spring session
1 choice from the group of subjects from your major
400681.2 Crime and Criminology
200007.1 Law Foundation
200010.1 Criminal Law

____________________________________________________
Year 2 (Just social science)

400337.1 Social Research Methods
101346.1 Philosophies of Social Sciences
and 4 units from your major - pool units

Plus law units

200011.1 Contracts
200012.1 Property Law

Year 3

Just social science

101301.1 Social Science in Action and 5 units from your major pool

Plus law units:

200009.1 Constitutional Law
200013.1 Administrative Law

Double check this with Sharyn Mcgee: s.mcgee@uws.edu.au - I am pretty sure its right though.

REMEMBER TO KEEP IN MIND PREREQUISITES WHEN CHOOSING SUBJECTS FROM THE UNIT POOL. aLSO SINCE YOU ARE DOING LAW YOU DONT HAVE ANY ELECTIVES. sUBJECTS THAT YOU DO HAVE TO COME FROM YOUR MAJOR AND YOU CANT DO MORE SUBJECTS THAN WHATS REQUIRED.

Anyway, hope I have helped.

thanks for that. It made things a bit clearer. So when you say i have no free electives i have to pretty much do all the units from my major's pool of units. Also why cant you do more units then is required? Last semester i completed one of the units; SC103A Forensic Science. If i get advanced standing for this unit can i only do 3 units in a semester? Or can i do the full 4? Certain electives dont run every year and i dont wanna miss out on some units.

EDIT: On a side note, what are some examples of Epistemological units?
