are we normally given a sheet with all the names, formulas and charges of common ions (cations and annions)? if not, what would YOU recommend remembering??

Use your periodic table for the monatomic ions and you just have to remember the polyatomic ones.

Most common ones I use are ammonium, carbonate, sulfate&sulfite, nitrate

Google/wiki "common ions"

Edit: also look through syllabus, sometimes they mention specific compound - ions in those are usually useful

generally the common anions are sulfate, phosphate, carbonate and chloride (there the ones you need to know) and the common cations are barium, calcium, copper, lead, iron (II) and iron (III)
