yeah it is classic Richard style, which is a good sign :)

hmm, just a random thought then...does that mean next year (ie. 2007) there will be no pre-req to do comp2011 in order to do 3rd year comp subs?

i'm not quite sure if i'm doing it coz i want to or coz its a pre-req for 3rd year comp subs...or both ><" i'm confused :S

well being a current 2011 student all i can say is that its a pretty fun course (that would've been better if we had richard instead of this foo) where the assignments are challenging but still comfortably doable once u know what you are doing.

i haven't done the final exam yet so i can't comment on that... otherwise its been pretty bludgey.

1921 is the old COMP1B/HIGHER COMP1B combined. It's a first year course.

It is NOT a second year course, nor is it the second session combination of the follow on from COMP2011/2711.

Second year courses are being redone (same as first year), to be put in place next year.

Hi MedNez
yeah, I realised that 1921 is Comp1B just renamed..which is why it worries me because I've already done Comp1B.

From the handbook: http://www.timetable.unsw.edu.au/2006/COMP2011.html#S2
it's clear that COMP2011 will be taught with COMP1921 - which makes me wonder...last year COMP1B & Higher COMP1B combined was bad enough...how are they going to combine a 2nd year and a 1st year subject??? (I'm presuming most people who will take COMP2011 have already done COMP1B!)

You guys complain about 2711/2011 so much, and then when we figure out we can't do it, you say its great!

Anybody know if we'll still be using Java next session?

Yes, you will definitely be using JAVA beacuse if you don't then you will be royally screwed for the rest of your computing major because so many courses require JAVA.

Java should not be in 1921...., content of 1921 should be roughly the same as COMP2091.

http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~richardb/syllabus/

2911 on the otherhand should be taught in Java (or C++!), and 2911 is the new pre-req to all third year cse courses...

However, because there are still some COMP1021 orphans who would still want to do 3rd year course (but not smart enough to do 2911) they will have to enrol as COMP2011 student but be assessed on 1921 material....

Might get extra assignments in 2011 next session, who knows.

I'm extremely confused, i really have no clue what i have to do, especially in terms of first year. I transferred and started straight into 2nd year, they credited me with COMP1911 and COMP1021 (this is the one im worried about), i did COMP2711 this semester and next semester i do COMP2041 and COMP2121, do i need to still do any first year subjects or can i go straight to third year? :/

Assuming you will pass 2711 (probably with a HD) then you are set to do higher year CSE courses

Don't worry, for those who have done 2011 they will be allowed to third year courses.

Only for those who will do the 1911-1921 sequence will need to do 2911 in place of 2011 because they havn't done "Comp 1A", that's all.

aargh! i'm even more confused now ><"
thanks gman03 for the syllabus link...its made things "clearer" in that now i know comp2011 isn't what i thought it is....(though that has made thiings more complicated!)

it seems like comp1921 = comp1b (s205) ....and if comp2011 is being taught with that then what's the point?! comp2911 seems to be more like comp2011....but can we do comp2911 w/o doing comp1921..coz it seems like thats a pre-req (but comp1921 is like comp1021/1721 from last year...)

why do they have to revamp the course now><"

Hmm. I just left 2011 till s2, since it didn't fit into my timetable s1. Now 2011 has been axed, I'm not sure what to do.

If I don't do 2011/1921 this session, it seems I would not be able to do 3rd yr computing subjects till s2 07 (since 2911 only runs from s1 07). Also, as Peggy (?) mentioned, would I be able to just do 2911 next yr anyway, since I have only done 1721 (not 1921)?.

If, on the other hand, I choose to do 2011/1921, then it will count as I've done 2011, and I will be able to do 3rd yr computing courses next yr? *But* I would not of learn't Java/have to learn it on my own.

Aargh, this is annoying.

it's ur fault for not choosing 2011 this session. why would you not choose it when it was made loud and clear that it was offered for the last time this session, and since its already a pre-req to virtually all 3rd yr electives. a lack of foresight on ur behalf.

I am also facing this problem - i only have 2 electives, and i want to do both 2911 this year s2, and a 3xxx subject next year. As it stands at the moment, that is impossible.

i think that the way the subjects are changed are really poorly done.

The reason I didn't choose it this session is, as I mentioned is *because it didn't fit in my timetable*.

Also, the first I heard about 2011 not running next session was when someone pointed it out to me on the 2011 page (during the middle of this session).

The handbook said it was still running in s2, and as far as I knew, the new subjects were only coming in next yr (for second yrs). If I knew this earlier, I would of reconsidered the subjects I chose.

Also, even after I found out, I was expecting (as I think many were) that the replacement subject would be quite similar to 2011, just "better". The only way I now know that the replacement subject is not running till next yr, and may have extra prereqs is because of the link gman03 posted.

I don't know how it was made "loud and clear" that 2011 should be taken first session. Did we get an email with a link to that page, or a message advising second yrs to do 2011 first session? The most I'd heard was that there were new subjects coming in, but little did I know of the situation I would be in now. Was it announced in lectures last yr?

AFAIK you will just missed out learning how to use Java to handle data structure. However if you learn it in C then you can easily port it to Java or C++.

On the bright side 1921 addresses the problem that in old 2011 you have to learn a new techniques AS WELL AS new language at the same time, while in 1921 I guess you do it without learning a new language.... Far better off from student perspective.. Save you time from digesting Java where time better spent understanding Tree structures etc. Remeber how difficult it was for you to do your first assignment in C after say 3 weeks of learning? Think about that.

From what I understand so far, 1921 is just 2011 without Java, and believe me you can learn Java by yourself. What is harder is the Data Structure part which will be covered in 1921.

For those who have done 1021 but not 2011 yet, what I think would happen is that on your transcript it will say 2011, but you are actually attending the Data Structure and Algorithm course. So technically 2011 will still me available for you to choose in myUNSW, is just that you share lectures with 1921 people.

Hope I am correctly.

Last year we were told that there wouldn't be any 2011 this year.... well, that was what Aleks the lecturer said...

Er... I don't think 2911 is an elective on top of 1011-1021-2011 sequence....

Oh well, I suppose you could say it serves me right for not going to lectures, but 1021 was *extremely* boring. Surely, something this important deserves to be announced more "clearly" (assuming it was announced in 1021 in the first place). Also, did they mention anything about the mess you'd be in if you decided not to take it in s1? i.e. that 2011 wasn't just being replaced by "2011 improved".

I hope you are correctly too. Although, I would prefer to learn Java at uni, I suppose I could do it myself. I may just try the 2011 s1 exercises/assignments myself.

If it goes as you say, it would actually be pretty good. Firstly, we get Richard. Secondly, we get to use C. Thirdly, it should be pretty easy, since most students will be first yrs, but at the same time not too bludgy, since it will be probably taken by Richard.

I wonder what I would do if I wanted to do 1927? It seems 2711 doesn't seem to be offered s2, and I don't think it would be a good idea to enrol in 1927 directly. Oh well, no big deal.
