Ca someone explain to me why my friend got an ATAR in the 60s when all her marks were over 71? (Four Band 4s and one Band 5). Is this becuase of rankings?
Use https://www.uac.edu.au/atar-compass/ or any atar calculator. Because 70 is actually below average in almost every subject. Plus the subjects they do must be trash (consequently scale badly)because I put my subjects with 73 in all and I still got a 73 atar

the atar is NOT a mark. Its a ranking among everyone else in our year group. UAC looks at the the marks across all. the subjects and compares them and uses algorithms to scale the marks. This essentially works out how "difficult" a subject is compared to others, as it can be much easier or harder to get a certain mark in some subjects. For example, getting an 80 on ext. 2 maths is far more difficult than getting 80 in standard maths. From this, your scaled marks are calculated (we don't get these individually), and then compared to rank each student in order of achievement. \

So the actual numbers you get as marks from nesa do not directly translate to an atar. Your atar is only a rank, which is calculated by essentially comparing your marks against the rest of nsw to work out how many people did better than you and how many did worse

What was the average 2024 ATAR?
median was 71.55. For those wondering why its not 50, that atar kind of includes all the people in our year group, including those who dropped out, pushing the median/mean atar of those who actually got one up above 50

it's probably because of the subjects she chose. example, if she chose physics and got a 71 it wouldn't be the same as her getting a 71 in standard english - NESA scales those marks respectively to align with the difficulty of that subject as if everyone in the state sat it.

Because of that, even though she may have gotten perceivably average marks e.g, a 71, she still might've been below the course average which could've been for an example a 78 -> which as a result, would affect her overall ATAR.

ATAR ≠ marks, your ATAR is your rank in regards to how you went in comparison to others also in the 2024 cohort.

Im aiming to get an offer from USYD for Commerce & Science in January round 1 (since they lower the indicative selection rank to 93), however, my selection rank is a 92.25 ( :biglaugh: ) -- do you guys still think I have a chance? Has anyone heard of somebody or has experience getting into a course at USYD with a lower selection rank than written?
