After reading about the pokie regulation debate and while I was going for a run today, I had this awesome idea
What if they invented, like, a calorie pre-commitment cap for obese people? The premise of the pokies thing is you have to front up somewhere and say "I'm willing to put $2000 on my card", then when you're sitting at the pokies and it runs out you can't keep shovelling money in, you have to go back and say "put another $2000 on" and that makes you realize what you're doing.
So why don't they have all retailers make a database of how many calories are in each food item they sell, and then provide all obese people with a card that allows them to purchase a certain number of calories of food per week, let's say ~5000kJ/day or maybe 40,000/week, then after that they can't access any more food from any shop
of course you might say "couldn't they get their friends to buy food" but we could regulate that by teaching kids to dob in their parents to the relevant authority who could then haul them away for mandatory intense physical training and reconditioning
