Welcome everyone!

If your goal is to achieve a band 6 for HSC 2U, 3U & 4U math, physics and chemistry please keep reading! My name is Gary and along with my colleagues Amir, Vinh and Evan specialise in giving YOU the secrets to getting a band 6 in HSC math (3u and 4u), physics and chemistry.

Over the last 5 years, we have taught hundreds of students and every student we have taught have achieved AT LEAST a band 5/6 in every subject. Most of them have gone on to study:

- Medicine
- Optometry
- Dentistry
- Law
- Engineering
- Commerce

at leading universities across Australia. The 2016 results spoke for themselves. Out of the 60 students we taught:

99.75 was the top ATAR
93 was the lowest ATAR
97 was the average ATAR
97 was the HIGHEST mark for PHYSICS
97 was the HIGHEST mark for CHEMISTRY
93 was the average mark for Chemistry
93 was the average mark for Physics
90% Achieved the TOP BAND in Ext 1 Math (94 was the average)
90+ for Ext 2 Math was achieved by 80% of our students

Although these results are exceptional, none of our students were exceptionally smart themselves (Only half attended a selective school). The results are due to a combination of SMART guidance and HARDWORK!

_ _

How Did Our Students Gain Such Exceptional Results?

- Learning special exam techniques that has allowed them to think and do questions faster
- Consistent internal quiz/exam feedback
- Marked & critiqued homework with exceptional improvement in response technique
- Excelled in understanding more in less time
- Consistent help in school assessments tasks
- We do inclass chemistry experiments helping them gain an obvious advantage during school exams (Most students perform poorly at this in school assessments)

_ _

The team consists of highly experienced and regarded engineers/scientists including:

Gary (myself)
- Completed a BE in Mining Engineering (UNSW), completing a Business Degree and a PhD candidate for a Doctorate in Chemistry.
- 5+ years of teaching HSC 2U, 3U, 4U math, physics and chemistry
- Currently on an Academic Scholarship

Amir
- Completed a BE in Electrical Engineering (UNSW), completing a Masters in Electrical Engineering and a PhD candidate for a Doctorate in Physics.
- 5+ years of teaching HSC 2U, 3U, 4U math, physics and chemistry

Doctor Vinh Giang
- A medical doctor for over 20 years
- 10+ years in teaching HSC 2U, 3U & 4U Math

Doctor Evan Zhang
- Future medical doctor

Just helping my old tutor out (achieved 99.15 last year). I went with Gary a while back and found he was very enthusiastic and dedicated to his students. He was good at using diagrams to explain some of the really hard concepts like the slingshot effect. What I found most helpful was before starting new concepts Gary would provide a brief summary of what the topic was about and how it could be tested in exams.

It was a pleasure to teach you! Hard work always pays off. Don't worry to much about elec eng, from what I hear, as long as you do the work they give you then it truly isn't harder then any of the other engneerings.

If you want, I can give you some first year physics and math material. They should definitely help out!

Hey,

May I ask, but is this tuition place run in a house or an actual centre?

Hey Eyeseeyou,

Good to hear from you! We tutor in a residential location (house), we aren't a tutoring centre but the room is really well renovated to suit small classes. Would you be interested in joining us?

Well, I'm not really thinking of joining however this tutoring place does seem helpful. May I ask but do you make difficult concepts easy to understand and if so how do you do it?

Also, just saying but you should advertise everywhere. I mean using billboards and stuff like that and do it at train stations?

And you should do this discount thing where you should get students to suggest synergy education to their friends and once they do, they can get like 1 free lesson a term and so does their friend. Lol. The more they suggest and get others to join, the more free lessons they get. Haha

Re: DOCTOR & MASTERS EDUCATED | Ext 1 & 2 Math, Physics, Chemistry | 5-10 YRS EXPERIE

Thanks! Well, I think it is hard to pinpoint an exact method to helping understand difficult concepts as some concepts are quite theoretical whereas others are quite practical. I think it is important to always employ a variety of methods but I think a general framework would include:

1. Helping students understand why they are learning certain concepts and how exactly can they be applied in the real world (this engages their interest)

2. Use different methods of inquiry (e.g. the socratic method) so students can critically think about certain concepts

3. We always use a axiomatic method to allow students to fully comprehend and understand a certain subject. What I mean by understanding is not through an analogies approach but rather directly from first principles.

- Although many people say they teach or understand from fundamentals but the truth is, most people learn/teach by the analogy approach because it is the easier way to remember something
- However, the disadvantage is that most students need to consistently revise it because they find it hard to fully grasp the concept.
- An axiomatic approach does take a little be longer but the advantage is that once a concept is learn't then you barely need to revise it, hence that is how we cut down the learning time for our students

4. To finish off our teaching framework, we always make sure that students always have a positive mental state even if they do badly in one exam. Having a positive mindset really changes how you perceive certain concepts. Studies show that happiness allows the mind to be open to new ideas/concepts.

However, one more thing we try to mention is that we always create a feedback loop to ensure that as teachers, we are consistently improving. Other then the results of our students, what is even more important is feedback. I hope that has helped answer your question!

Also, thank you for providing advertising advice. We are currently trying to expand our operations and I like your ideas. Perhaps we can meet and talk more? I'm always open to new ideas and I really appreciate your thoughts, so thank you!

Re: DOCTOR & MASTERS EDUCATED | Ext 1 & 2 Math, Physics, Chemistry | 5-10 YRS EXPERIE

I have a whole stack tonne of suggestions for you

1. You should make your classes interesting and fun. Once you do, students would look forward to going to your classes
2. To improve on your teaching methods (and the other staff), I suggest you learn from the "experts" i.e. those with lots of teaching and tutoring experience, highly knowledgeable and superior teaching (I think a person on this forum with that type of knowledge is the user "fizzycyst" who currently does tutoring of his own for HSC physics)
3. When students are upset because of school performance, support them so then they can get back up on their feet again. For those who are doing well, support their success and wish them for their continued success
4. To understand how the system is different between tutoring and school, I would suggest employing a qualified school teacher or "using" someone you know who is a qualified teacher
5. If you plan to advertise using billboards and at train stations, be aware that it costs quite a lot of money so you might want to think less costly (i.e. go to schools and advertise there especially selective schools, private schools and local schools within the area of straithfield)

Thats all I have right now.

Also another suggestion:

During your tutoring lessons, you should run your lessons like this

15 minutes homework problems from previous week
25 minutes quiz and quiz solutions
Rest of lesson- going through the dotpoints and looking at how those dotpoints are applied to exam styled questions. Going through lots of misconceptions with students etc

Also, you should run these "holiday courses" where you pretty much do tutoring in he holidays rather than on school days/weekends. Convenient for those who like to "save time"

Re: DOCTOR & MASTERS EDUCATED | Ext 1 & 2 Math, Physics, Chemistry | 5-10 YRS EXPERIE

Thanks again for these suggestions! Many of the things you have suggested we already put into practise, including:

1. Making the classes interesting and fun -> we encourage group discussions, we always bring in physical objects to further engage student interests

2. In terms of expert advice, all our resources are reviewed by university professors and lecturers due to our close relationship with them as masters/PhD students. Furthermore, we pay three teachers from schools and university to provide us training and seminars on new teaching approaches including things like engagement.

3. We definitely always monitor a student before/after exams. We collect the information on the students exam days and we always contact them the day after their exam to see how they went.

4. So quizzes are usually 15 min and exam style solutions go for another 5 - 10min. We always do homework review right after our lessons for about 10 - 15 minutes.

But thanks on your suggestion for holiday courses! We ran one for chemistry this holidays and instead of doing them Monday - Friday we conducted them twice a week on Saturday & Sunday. The benefit of this was information retention and it also allowed students enough time to complete homework.

Also, we will definitely look into doing advertising on billboards etc. Thank you again!
