Doctor of medicine double degrees? (1 Viewer)

A friend of mine said he’s enrolling in a course at USYD which is doctor medicine/ bachelor of science.. or something along those lines. Is this a double degree? Isn’t doctor of medicine already extremely content heavy by itself?

Yea you study the bachelor of science for 3 years and then the Doctor of Medicine after for 4 years. It is definitely content heavy + need a 99.95 to get in

USyd's Double Degree Medicine program offers two study options, one of which was listed above, being the Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Medicine and the other being the Bachelor of Arts/Doctor of Medicine. As was mentioned, the Double Degree Medicine program comprises a three-year undergraduate degree in either arts or science followed by the four-year graduate-entry Doctor of Medicine. While the complete duration of the program is 7 years, the Doctor of Medicine component has a 4 year duration, compared to a 5-year Doctor of Medicine program in the case of WSU.

It becomes clear that universities offering medicine structure their programs (including length and content) differently. Another example would be UNSW, which, similar to USyd, offers the Doctor of Medicine as part of a program entailing other degrees, as follows:

• Bachelor of Medical Studies/Doctor of Medicine - This is a 6-year program. Successful completion of this program will result in the student being awarded two degrees.
• Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Medical Studies/Doctor of Medicine - This is an 8-year program that includes both components of the 6-year program with the addition of the Bachelor of Arts, hence extending this program to 8 years. Successful completion of this program will therefore result in the student being awarded three degrees.

Yea but what’s the point? Doctor of medicine and then post grad is all you need to become a doctor. Why take an extra science course

you need an undergrad to get into the postgrad MD. this just allows you to bypass the gamsat
it is sequential rather than simultaneous like a traditional double degree

But you need to do the UCAT to get into doctor of medicine for under gad, so you don’t need to do the Gamsat anymore?

usyd MD is a gamsat degree - different unis have different application criterias

that extra science course is like pre-med. it prepares you to understand higher level medical knowledge once you graduate and do MD

the normal way (just MD) is defs gamsat

doesn't that seem like a waste of time. ideally people would want to finish their course and get a job as quick as possible. Doing doctor of medicine and then post grad is what most people do. Why spend extra years just to prepare for something that you can still do with the normal route

there’s 2 versions of med: straight from high school (5-6 ys) or after you graduate your bachelors degree (postgrd MD 4yrs)

it’s very hard to get in after high school + med schools would appreciate the greater maturity of an older applicant pool.

USyd is a weird one where you can get guaranteed access to the postgrad version after doing a BSc out of high school since they don’t have an undergrad degree.
