Depends.

If there are say two classes running in Year 11 and there will only be one in Year 12 then yes the teacher can use their professional judgement and the marks to stop a student from continuing but...

if there is the same number of classes running - no they can't but ... they can strongly recommend that a student drops a subject based on their knowledge and past experience.

Yes AND No.

I know in selective schools, or at least, a few that my friends go to, a lot of them were impacted by having to drop a Science or so because they weren't performing well and the school didn't want them to affect the cohort. Additionally, sometimes schools just need to cut down on the number of classes they have and actually keep the classroom of students who are motivated, hard working and smart which is ultimately reflected in their marks.

At my school, both situations have happened.
Well, in my opinion, I think that private schools will be more of the type to force students to drop for a number of reasons but public schools shouldn't. Those who are at the top of the class and performing extremely well shouldn't be impacted by those performing too poorly, but those in the middle will likely get dragged down. But if a student, who is not the best at a subject, chooses to stay then well, they made that choice. I have never truly heard that a teacher has the right to do that for real though.

I think they can. Maybe not the teacher but the school's faculty of science.
One of my friends consistently trolled his biology exams (total score was zero) and was forced to drop it after trials.

Hm, apparently I've heard is that if they do force you to, all you need to do is contact the Bored of Studies. At least that's what I've heard.
