TBH I don't think it will ever happen. I don't know how they can say that an 18 year old is responsible enough to join the army, to drive, to vote etc, but they're not responsible enough to drink.

Really, all these kids who drink drive are drinking at house parties anyway, where RSA is not enforced and the drinking age means nothing.

I think I'm part of the typical "Teach kids how to drive properly" school of thought.

Is the road toll really rising?

Supposing it is, doesn't that mean that current restrictions on young drivers have been ineffective and should be repealed?

kevin rudd, get Fucked. I have been waiting too long for this.

but seriously as others have said do you really think that raising the drinking age will a) stop underage drinking and b) reduce deaths on the road. Instead of people drinking in monitored environment in bars etc, it will promote binge drinking among friends in other locations which is potentially much more dangerous. Not that im encouraging kids to drink but it is a common and (i emphasise this) ALMOST necessary experience amongst teens. I have been drilled ever since i can remember about not to drink and drive, and i have never gone near a car when i have had a drink (nor have many others i know) thus i think it is greater educating/policing which is necessary to combat this problem, not a raise in the legal age. It also angers me to see those who are fucking stupid to drink and drive put others in danger and ruin a right for the rest of us.
Also, how do you expect those who are 18/19/20 to just "stop" drinking..

Just some thoughts take it however you like...

We have pretty fair and reasonable laws atm (in general), but politicians are getting really controlling and proposing some pretty stupid shit just to exercise their powers.
As someone mentioned people drink at like 15 now so it aint gunna change anything.

We're supposed to have freedom but it feels like we are heading backwards.
slowly turning into communism... D:

that's so stupid! thanks to those dickheads who speed with their p's. then again, if 16 year old's are able to get their hands on alcohol, i'm sure 18 year old's are.

nah bro decreasing still

but

so far this year it is higher than last year (significantly tbh)

but on a whole, deaths from motor vehicle accidents are not statistically significant AT ALL

also to be honest, the higher the age limit for risky activities, the less harm those activities will cause

this will always be the case, whether due to population factors or the policy actually working

so suck it up, Rudd has a point. Harm minimisation is what they are on about.

My only issue is that government intervention should be limited, and this is the opposite

Last year (or 2008, whatevs) had the lowest road roll since some time in the 50s, so there was always going to be a spike in the road toll in the following years.

changinf the rules won't help prevent the deaths of those not obeying the rules, why should I have to stop drinking and why shouldn't me sister be allowed to start, just cos some idiots are drink driving? They'll gain access to alcohol anyway

Im sure at least 90% of the people in parliament drank when they were 18. Its sort of like "Don't do what the rest of Australia did, when they were young and stupid, you're much better than that generation z"

WTF?

People will just get even more intoxicated and get fucked up on acid instead

People break the law and drink drive. Clearly if we make a law against drinking they will obey it.....

There is good reason for the government to take this course of action. Hospitals, Schools, Police and other important services are fed up with violet behavior in society. If you know your history you will understand why it was reduced and why it should have been returned to 21 straight after the war.

I wouldn't fear any real action from Police they are too busy with domestics bogans to worry about piss heads killing people on our roads.

So just just keep wandering around aussie aussie aussie oi oi oi and one day who knows your parents and friends will see you on the evening news as a misadventure statistic.

There is simply not enough cops that could give2fuks about u anyway so do the right thing and you'll be sweet.
