Hey so I'm trying to write a practic essay for standard english but I'm finding it hard to write about my related texts while trying not to write out the plot lines for them e.g. One related text is Looking For Alaska by John Green but I can't write about the main character without pretty much summarising the first chapter.

Any help would be great.

Just assume that the reader already knows the story inside-out. Writing about the character is fine, just don't write the whole plot out.

Example;
Jon is bitter because his mother left him, this caused to him to have a pessimistic attitude that isolated him from his peers.

In comparison to;
Jon was abandoned at a young age by his mother who was having an affair at the time. This was because she wanted to travel and the strain of being tied down to a family got to her. When Jon went to school he didn't feel like he could connect with anyone else and cut himself from human contact.
