hey guys

i have heard this course is the back way into physio...in other words i do this degree and then do the masters of physio

i am looking at either uni of sydney or uni of newcastle

but the uni of newcastle is call something different
bachelor of science then i specialise in physical activity and sport science

i looked at the couse info and they do the same topics and stuff but im still not sure if its what i need to become a sports physio

also im not that smart...prob only gonna get a UAI of about 75 but i still really wanna get into that course at syd (UAI of 87)....

i really dont want to waste a year transfering and stuff but i dunno what else i can do to get into syd.....

keep in mind that to become an accredited sports physio you will have to do extra study (i think a masters for a year?), even after you become an accredited physio. there's different requirements on getting into that sports physio course (since you're probably going to be getting in the back way), so keep all that in mind.

unis call their health science related courses different names, but the majority of them can get you into postgrad physio. your best bet is to get in touch with the relevant unis (usyd, uncle, csu if you're desperate) and then ask what is required.

Work your ass off and get that (was it 95-96 +) that you need to get into physio.

At usyd you can do a combined EXSS with nutrition

The best thing to do would ring up the unis and also go and talk to physios and sports physios. I think exercise and sports science is more for like sports scientist, and then yeah you can eventually do physio

^^ yep those degrees are for sports/exercise scientists/physiologists.

you pretty much become fully accredited after you finish your four year undergrad degree. not sure what the equivalent is if you do a sports/health science degree and postgrad physio however. i think its 5-6 years if you do it that way.

* masters of physio IS postgrad physio. postgrad study means study after you finish an undergraduate degree. by the time you do the ex&sc and masters of physio *should* make you recognised as an exercise scientist AND a physiotherapist which i guess makes you better qualified.

* just keep in mind that to be an accredited sports physio is different to being an accredited "regular" physio (for need of a better word). you will have to do a masters degree of some sort (extra study after you become a regular physio) to be recognised as a sports physio as well. note that's another masters degree after you do the master of physiotherapy. does that make sense?

*there are quite a number of physios who study physiotherapy in the hope of working with sporting teams and all that, which is what is what it looks like you want to do? just keep in mind that very few actually end up follow that path (lack of jobs in the area), in fact you would have to be pretty lucky for that.

as for your question about health science courses....i said before (added a bit but yeah)

im not setting my standards low....not every1 is perfect and going to get a UAI of 90 +http://community.boredofstudies.org/images/icons/icon8.gif
Angry....im being realistic....i'd be happy with a UAI of 80...but that still wont stop me from working my ass off to become a sports physio....yes my major aim would be to become a major sporting teams physio but if not i would still like to travel and work in other countries...or set up my own practice???..not sure yet

also..one other question

i dropped maths at the end of year 10 and the only science i do is biology (but i do pdhpe)...would i have to do a whole heap of bridging courses ie maths, chem and physics before i could do the ex&sc course???

definitely do chem. but you probably won't need the others.

I know this message is a month old but i thought i might be able to answer some questions about exss anyway.

Im currently a 3rd year sport science studnet at Usyd, yes you are correct, this can be a back door into physio. You need to do the three years science then one year masters, or you can work hard and transfer into the undergraduate physio degree from the sports science. Keep in mind that many people use this way to get into physio and the masters degree is very competitive.
As for bridging courses, i never did any, a couple of my friends did and said it was kinda pointless as the science does start basic but does move pretty quickly, its really what makes you feel comfortable.
The last thing ill point out is that no one really cares what uai you get once your there and don't let the uai make you think you won't get in, when i started it was about 88/89 but one of my friends got offered first round with a 83, just depends on numbers of applications.

hey whats the difference between a sport scientist and an exercise physiologist?

is exercise physiologist a new occupation?

and does anyone know roughly the salary of the sport scientist and EP??

yes exercise physiologist is a relatively new occupation

"sports scientist" is a broad term, basically it uses science coupled with knowledge of health and movement to help improve sporting performance. they usually specialise though. so for example you could specialise in biomechanics where you can help improve running technique or something by looking at how someone runs, you could help produce swimsuits that are aerodynamically sound, you could develop a training programs, stuff like that. its a broad term but really it's quite a specialised thing

exercise physiologists...well they design exercise programs to help treat an injury. yes physiotherapists can also do this job but the difference is exercise physiologists do more on the rehabilitation side of things. so what you might see in a physio clinic is the physio treating the injury and passing the patient on to the exercise physiologist for rehab. of course its also a branch of sports science too, but they can also work in a physio/hospital setting.
