Is it be in drive, put left foot on break, rev to about 3-4000, release break and at the same time floor the accelerator?

Bought a 98 commodore exec and i want to see how fast i can take off. I am pretty sure reving in neutral than slamming it into drive will fuck shit up so i dont want to try that.

that's called a d-slammer and it's basically a way to fuck up your gearbox and achieve a burnout.

Try this awesome stunt, its called dont be a fucking idiot. I hear its fully sick. The bitches love it, plus your car doesn't get fucked up by it.
taking off fast =/= speeding.

Its just out of curiousity anyway, iam a fairly safe driver and dont usually see a need to go fast. I dont see the problem in knowing how to take off quickly, especially if you are trying it on a private road.

A few months back when i still had my Audi two litre turbo; there was launch control where you disable the esp and then put pressure on both the brakes and the accelerator; then it would automatically rev till around 4000 and once you release the brakes it will launch itself...

I've known for some people who do that on ordinary cars which also works...but i don't recommend it if the car doesn't have that feature becuase it does damage the car...

Get a manual if you really want to launch....that's why i got the current S3 instead..

If you want to mess around with quick takeoffs and the like, pick up a manual or find a friend that will let you use theirs. And there's nothing wrong with wanting to see what the car is capable of, anybody who's into cars will muck around with shit like this at some point. You're not going to hurt anybody, although you're definitely going to fuck your car up if you try that crap in your OP.
If you want a bit of fun that might actually come in handy at some point, go and learn how to correct if you lose it on a corner. Over/under steer is covered in most driver ed courses and you get to lulz around on a skidpan.
For reference, if you change from neutral to drive at anything over 3000rpm you are going to be doing serious damage to your gearbox. I shift neutral to drive in mine at 900 (idle), and I wouldn't try it at anything higher than 1200 because I'm fucking cautious as hell with my current gearbox.

should only move the auto gearstick when the car is totally stopped and with ur foot on the brake or u can damage heaps of shit ie transaxles, in the transmission. shouldnt even put it in to neutral even when just rolling slowly

I sometimes (rarely) do the left on brake, right on gas to get a little kick (only go for eg +500rpm from idle. Hate the auto sludge feeling.

But if you're going to do more rpm, go for handbrake just as you would launch most cars.

I highly doubt the stall point on a stock commodore is over 3000 rpm. But yeh, generally you left foot brake accelerate until it won't go any higher then take your foot of the brake and floor it.

You can race legally these days you know, its called legal off street racing. Titled very appropriately.

Don't be so keen to jump on the bandwagon.

That may well be the case - but he is still well within his rights to learn any racing technique he likes.

The brake launch technique is not something new in an auto... but just watch you don't rev it too hard (or for too long)- anything higher than say 3k rpm or more than 4 or 5 seconds and you probably will kill your transmission. I can't give a very technical explanation but in layman's terms, you're forcing two parts of the car to go against each other and hence do it too much or too hard and something's gonna give.

I ocassionally do this technique when I know I need to launch quickly such as at a traffic light where I know there is a lane merge up ahead, and it overcomes the throttle delay which is prevalent in alot of autos.

thats why most people chuck it into neutral when they can. That degradation is still happening in normal conditions (its normal, but most typical Asian/Jap transmissions suck:))

If there is a merge ahead, and you don't give a crap about your trans, use the auto quickshift too.
