Was thinking of finance and maths
I do Finance & Maths. Better off sticking with USyd and UNSW which respectively have strengths in the applied maths and probabilistic aspects of financial maths.

UTS would be good if you want to do a Financial Maths PhD while working.

Does Maths help anyone who is planning a career in business? like say finance and maths. Does maths have anything to do with finance? Wouldnt it be better say doing just commerce and majoring or majoring and minoring in finance and accounting respectively so that you have more offer to a company?

Usually employers do favour those with more degrees. But of course, the degree must bear some relevance to your job.

I think its best to focus on your strengths rather than diversification. It depends from person to person.

Dont be another accounting statistic. Do maths/finance. More sought after and more useful in any industry. More challenging/interesting/greater earning potential etc.

Yes, look up financial mathematics on wikipedia. Basically, it's good to know maths as it helps you understand new financial models being developed. You should also consider actuarial studies. Are you doing MATH1151/1251?

There is more demand for accountants in general.

Aside: If I was to go back and choose my degree again, I would've done BE(Mech)/BSc

As finance/maths is quite specialised and a risky degree in that there is no professional qualification, you need to be able stand out. It's a lot harder to find jobs as there aren't that many available and you need to be able to create a favourable impression. In essence, there is demand for the right kind of person, which means you have to be good (relative to other students).

That is very true. I was doing a vanilla Bsc in maths, and had a long hard thought about it. My friends dad, an actuary gave me an example of a super qualified maths guy, who was doing the accounts in the firm fine, however he was fired and a CA hired because he lacked the professional accreditation.

Funny seraphim, im basically doing that plan (bsc/be(mech). But mech has a lot of subjects that don't look very quanty. BUT, I dont think you need to be that good to stand out. In the UK, a Maths degree is quite hard to get into in the good unis, often needing AAA (98.3 uai) or AAAA (no conversion for this), and they seem to get good jobs (the ones with 2.1 honours or greater).

You could always get an ops/tech div job and then do CFA, and use that as a small career boost.

IMO its better to do maths, and learn a bit about what actuarial is like, if you enjoy it, do the masters in actuarial to get the exemptions.

Seraphim: What book would you recommend for introductory financial mathematics?

Atm math PhDs are in hot demand for quant jobs in Sydney.

Knowing numerical and analytical techniques for DEs is useful in both finance and engineering, eg anything on fluid mechanics, finite element methods, etc

FUrther qualifications on top of uni are meant to complement the job you are in. So if you're in ops, knowing people and the market seems more important than doing CFA.

Also, I don't think CFA is even that important if you want to be in trading/risk management/quant/structuring, etc. It's more relevant to the equities research/investment banking/asset manegemtn businesses.

However, even though I'm more into the quant side, I am considering CFA as it is a globally recognised which helps when applying for degrees overseas.

the surprise gesture was of sarcasm however i had one friend who went to uts for her first time that does engineering to go to this event which engineering Australia will NEVER invite you ever again due to your faculty corrupt values, however she told me that socially my uni shits all over yours, "omg man your uni has normal people and it feels like your not an outcast"

lol you can be a prick to the union but never to Engineering Australia
I would try to argue with you, but really, I don't understand what you just typed. I mean, I understand that you people seem to have the idea that all engineering is numbers, but the majority is report writing and effective communication to manage people. Good luck trying to land a job with your that awesome sentence construction. Please come back after you taken basic classes in written communication.

everyone understood it except for you, wouldnt that mean something
Did you go and ask everyone if they understood it? Why don't you take a fucking survey retard? Why are you even on this forum other than to stir up shit? You speak as if you have such a great social life at your uni, yet here you are, posting on a forum that is not even related to your university. Boy, I can tell that you people at UTS have a full and satisfying social life that mainly consists of trying to stir up people to alleviate your boredom.

Again, why won't you answer my question? "Why are you even on this forum other than to stir up shit? Oh, and we employ things called full stops. I know it might be a relatively new concept, but do try to get with the times.

Hey hear that everyone? I'm 'a sheer enjoyment'. Oh how I've longed for this.

I'm sure it's for that reason alone that you post in this section, and you have an absolutely awesome social life.

I love my life when I am not pursuing the best. If it comes, it comes. If it is, it is. Time better spend chatting with chics than comparing e-penis length.

Now where is Lundy....?

I only need to tell you one thing.

UNSW has the number one Engineering faculty.

That's it.

No point in arguing for anyone else, UNSW wins.

We have the best lecturers, most floorspace, most schools, most students, highest level of research grants, most sponsors and the best rated programs in Australia.
heh doesnt make up for the fact unsw is gay - usyd has a better reputation worldwide anyway which is what matters
