Hi!

For Extension we're doing crime writing and my teacher never talked about genre or genre theory but straight away launched into crime and crime conventions. I had a 10 mins tutorial speech assessment coming up and I was wondering if I should use genre theory in it even though my teacher never mentioned anything about it? Do all you guys doing genre need to use genre theory? (or is it something that has gone from the syllabus like how in speeches you can if you want but aren't required to use 'readings' anymore?)

Thanks!

We didn't really learn about it either but I mentioned it in a speech I had a couple of days ago and my teacher seemed to like it. So yeah go for it, but don't stray too far from what you're meant to be discussing. Also try to enmesh it into your topic if you choose to talk about it. For example if you're talking about the constant change in conventions you can mention the fickle nature of the genre and how that constitutes to it's continued popularity.

Hope that helps :)
