In terms of specs, the gaming laptop would have gaming specs, which are above what one needs for uni generally (except for maybe high-demanding courses). If you're studying a not-so-demanding course (mainly using Office), then the gaming laptop would be more than enough.

Some pros:

- Less need to worry about whether or not a particular software can run
- More power allowing for smooth running of tasks (CPU, RAM)
- Will most likely have a better display (not really a great advantage but still good to have)
- Will most likely have a long lasting battery

Some cons:

- May be more expensive than a non-gaming laptop
- If your course is mainly about writing essays/reports and making presentations, then the gaming specs would be too high and not really useful (as a lot of non-gaming laptops can get you the specs you need for those basic tasks)

Asking for a friend who is eyeing the Acer - Nitro 5 Notebook -I5/2.5GHZ - 8GB - 512GB. Although not a machine for serious gamers; may be alright for an Eng student on a budget.

Asking for a friend who is eyeing the Acer - Nitro 5 Notebook -I5/2.5GHZ - 8GB - 512GB. Although not a machine for serious gamers; may be alright for an Eng student on a budget.

Since it's a Nitro 5, I would also assume it also has a good graphics card. It'll most likely be pretty good for both gaming and uni.

My Acer Aspire 5 from 2018 has similar specs, except for storage (which I'm assuming would be SSD) and graphics:

- i5 2.5-2.7 GHz
- 12 GB RAM
- 1 TB HDD
- 940 mx with 2gb vram (which isn't as bad as it sounds tbh).

And it still runs games pretty decently.

because u mentioned it u will be a "one device man" i would prob recommend something that is gonna last u at least the length of ur degree plus maybe a few more years.

i used to hate macs but after using one for work it's actually alright. the m1 processor is quite fast, has all the programs i need etc. and also they have good resale value so after say 5 yrs u could still probably get like $500 back for it as opposed to a winOS where you couldn't even give it away for free

I plan on studying commerce, so what are some good laptops?

Don't know if this has been mentioned, but excel on mac has less functionality than excel on windows & it's super annoying to use excel in particular on VMware or likewise which your uni will likely provide. The M1 macs are looking pretty sweet right now, especially because of the thermal performance as laptops get hot. You can always run windows on your mac.

I'd personally stalk Ozbargain untill something good comes up. They generally mention a lot of important things such as colour gamut, key travel, known defects & other which aren't obviously advertised on the original listing. Also, make sure you checkout the education stores for a hefty discount which all major computer companies have. You can also get cashback with cashrewards/shopback which might be worthwhile.

Quick question- lectures and some tutorials are online due to the present situation therefore one can guess how much work is done on this machine; would it be advisable to buy another laptop? Current one does shut down from time to time I believe from overheating . Would appreciate any thoughts on this.

Buy a cheap one just for quality of life purposes if you plan to use it everyday.

A cheap, legacy chromebook is highly recommended. If you do an IT degree you just need to install Linux over the Chromium OS and ur ready to go.
