for those of you who would like to know the new things that it searches and indexes:

Netscape Mail / Thunderbird
Netscape / Firefox / Mozilla
PDF
Music
Images
Video

Lots of goodies in that list!
Only thing I'm wondering about is how successful the music indexing will be, if they could get into the ID3 tags it would be really good.

Now there's a forward-looking perspective bound to stand the test of time! :)

Personally I think it just seems like a fundamentally bad idea for both security and privacy. From what I can gather after having read about it, it also sounds like in many cases its default behaviour is to index things which most people would rather it not index. Another thing that concerns me, given the amount of information that it indexes, is the following clause from the privacy policy listed on their site:
Personally identifying information, such as your name or address, will not be sent to Google without your explicit permission.

How we use unique application numbers, cookies and related information.

Your copy of Google Desktop Search includes a unique application number.
Interesting. Looking around the Internet, it's also fairly evident that a lot of other people also have concerns. I would test for myself, but like I said, the concept sounds flawed and it's a risk (And "convenience") I can do without.

Just updating. 2.0 (beta) is out. haven't played with it yet.

I think they got rid of the slow ass web based interface.

I kinda like the sidebar, only if they showed the weather for Australia. I like how they have the rotating photo slideshow, rss feeds and the gmail notifier.

and you can run programs from the search now!

so you can type in "notepad" and press enter and it will open notepad. In the same fashion as windows vista

EDIT: do you know how to move the search box to the top of the side bar? cause if I auto hide the task menu it is hard to click on the search box. or is there are shortcut to activate it?

A few useful notes. cause google shows everything on your computer it is useful to specify filetype.

you can do it with:

"filetype:" search
You can restrict what type of files Desktop returns via the filetype: operator and an argument of either a file type extension or the full name of an Office application. For instance, if you search for [tax filetype:xls] or [tax filetype:excel], your search results will include only Excel files containing the word "tax". If you search for [filetype:abc], your results will include only files that have a .abc file extension. As with the site: operator, do not put any spaces between filetype: and its extension or type argument.
of course you may already know this. but I didn't and found it useful :)

I also didn't know this.
Advanced email search
You can restrict your search to look for matches within email message headers. The available email search operators are:
Subject:
To:
From:
Cc:
Bcc:
I really think these features need to be more visible.
