Just got an email regarding Grade Point Averages (GPA) which will be introduced with the release of results for this semester (well, Autumn 2008).

Post your thoughts here.

[QUOTE="Email]
This email is to advise you of new information to be included on Academic Records (Transcripts) with the release of results from autumn semester 2008

What is a Grade Point average?

A Grade Point Average is a way to measure the academic performance
of individual students in their course of study. UTS will use a 4.00 GPA

It is based on a predetermined weighting that calculates the GPA
score based on a student’s subject grade and credit points
The GPA will be recorded on your student record and is
re-calculated each teaching period following the release
of subject results. As such, the GPA is a progressive
measure of a student’s academic achievement over the
duration of enrolment in a course of study.

Which students will receive a Grade Point Average?

The GPA will only apply to students that commenced their
course of studies at UTS from autumn 2003 onwards.
Students that have started their courses on or after
autumn 2003 and have completed the requirements will
also have a GPA calculated for their course of study.
The GPA is not applicable to research degrees and is
relevant to most coursework courses.

If a student is eligible for a Grade Point Average
it cannot be suppressed from a student’s academic record.

How is my Grade point Average Calculated?

The GPA is calculated using a formula based on
two dimensions, namely:
(i) A grade point for each UTS grade, and
(ii) Subject credit points values.

There are a number of conditions applicable to the
publication of a Grade point average. Theses are

• Only grades for enrolled subject are included
in the GPA calculation. This means that exemptions or
any other form of RPL are not included in the GPA calculation.
• Subjects where the grade type is an ungraded pass or fail (PF) are not included in the GPA calculation.
• Students who have studied in multiple UTS
courses will receive a unique GPA for each course,
provided each course started on or after autumn 2003.
For example, a student that completed an undergraduate
course and then enrols in postgraduate studies at UTS,
will receive a GPA for each course of study.
The same applies to a student who transfers from one
course to another,.
• The Course GPA will not be calculated until
outstanding results have been finalized. Therefore students
with a withheld (W), result pending (Q), supplementary (T) or grade not
submitted (E) will not have a GPA calculated or published.
The GPA will only be calculated when these results become
valid grades and have been ratified on CASS.
• All fail results of any enrolled subject within a course will be included in the GPA calculation, except when the grade type is ungraded (PF)

How will the GPA be calculated?

The UTS grade point average (GPA) is based on a 4.00 point GPA scale.

Subjects included
Grades for all enrolled subjects within a course will be included in the GPA calculation, including fail results, except where the grade type is ungraded.

Subjects where you have exemptions or any form of recognition of prior learning are not included in the calculation.

GPA formula
The GPA is calculated using a formula based on two dimensions:

a grade point for each subject grade, and
subject credit points.
All GPA values are between the range of 0.00 and 4.00.

The GPA formula is:

GPA = [(Sub1 GP x CP) + (Sub2 GP x CP) + . . (SubN GP x CP)] /(Total CP enrolled)

Where:
Sub GP = the subject's grade point value
CP = Credit points

Subject grade point (GP)
The following table summarises the grade point schema, per subject grade, used for GPA calculations.

High Distinction
Grade: H
Grade point: 4.0

Distinction
Grade: D
Grade point: 3.0

Credit
Grade: C
Grade point: 2.0

Pass
Grade: P
Grade point: 1.0

Conceded pass
Grade: R
Grade point: 0.5

Fail
Grade: Z, X, WF
Grade point: 0.0

Ungraded subjects
Grade: Pass or Fail
Grade point: Exclude

Calculation example
For a student with the following results for the subjects completed in their course to date:

Autumn Semester
Corporate Law
Subject grade: Distinction (D)
Subject grade point (GP): 3.0
Credit point (CP): 6
Criminal Law
Subject grade: Credit (C)
Subject grade point (GP): 2.0
Credit point (CP): 6
Law of Torts
Subject grade: Pass (P)
Subject grade point (GP): 1.0
Credit point (CP): 6
Real Property
Subject grade: Fail (Z)
Subject grade point (GP): 0.0
Credit point (CP): 6
Spring Semester
Insolvency
Subject grade: High Distinction (H)
Subject grade point (GP): 4.0
Credit point (CP): 6
Revenue Law
Subject grade: Withdrawn Fail
Subject grade point (GP): 0.0
Credit point (CP): 6
Civil Litigation
Subject grade: Credit (C)
Subject grade point (GP): 2.0
Credit point (CP): 6
Administration Law
Subject grade: Credit (C)
Subject grade point (GP): 2.0
Credit point (CP): 6
The following steps are used to calculate the GPA:

For each enrolled subject, multiply the subject grade point (GP) by the credit point (CP) value:

Corporate Law
GP x CP = 3.0 x 6 = 18
Criminal Law
GP x CP = 2.0 x 6 = 12
Law of Torts
GP x CP = 1.0 x 6 = 6
Real Property
GP x CP = 0.0 x 6 = 0
Insolvency
GP x CP = 4.0 x 6 = 24
Revenue Law
GP x CP = 0.0 x 6 = 0
Civil Litigation
GP x CP = 2.0 x 6 = 12
Administration Law
GP x CP = 2.0 x 6 = 12
Determine the acculated value of CP X GP (from Step 1) for all subjects enrolled:

Accumulated CP X GP = 18+12+6+0+24+0+12+12 = 84

Work out the total number of credit points for all subjects enrolled:

Total credit points = 6 X 8 = 48

Divide acculated value of CP X GP for all subjects enrolled (from Step 2) by the total credit points (from Step 3):

GPA = 84 / 48 = 1.75

I dont really care what my GPA is. I think the level of award will still be based on Weighted Average Mark (WAM).

Yeah. I agree.. although some standardisation between universities and the use of GPA is good.

I think they used to but not anymore. Also might depend on faculty as well- since GPA will be on all transcripts from 2003.

This is lame. I'm so never showing my GPA to my employer, like ever. Lucky I'm an arts student and my qualification doesn't matter anyway!

And I'd ovulate, intensely, if UTS still offered conceded passes.

Kami.. is that really you? You havent been on BOS for ages!!

Back to the topic, I've just noticed a Facebook group that opposes the introduction of the GPA as it is a different system used by MacqUni (HD and D = 4, and then so forth).

I just looked it up, lol. Forgive me if this is answered in the email but my attention span is tiny and I couldn't be arsed reading past the 2nd paragraph, but are they releasing GPA in lieu of a WAM or with it.

The student center replied to me that they still use WAM to determine the level of award. So the answer is the second one.

You dont really need to read it all.. the rest of the email just talks about how it is calculated.

Yeah. I got sick of posting because I realised that there's nothing I can really get out of being on here anymore - it's not like I'm gonna go hang out with a bunch of '09ers or ask them for advice. Tired of of answering the same questions over and over again as well, usually without receiving thanks.
