AUTHORITIES are investigating the identity of an apparent al-Qaeda militant who has warned of further terror attacks on the West.
Speaking in what appears to be an Australian accent, the masked man, wearing combat gear and holding an automatic rifle, boasted in the videotaped message about the killing of US troops in Afghanistan.
The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) is investigating the authenticity of the tape, which first aired on the Dubai-based Al-Arabiya satellite channel.
The taped message warned that more terrorist attacks would be launched on the West.
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said the tape seemed to be authentic and the man, while it was hard to judge his nationality, could be Australian.
"There are a very small number of Australians who have become involved in the jihad movement and have gone to south Asia and the Middle East," Mr Downer said.
"Whether this is one of those people or not, we simply don't know at this stage."
Opposition foreign affairs spokesman Kevin Rudd urged the Government to provide every possible resource to ASIO to track down the person.
"I've just seen a copy of this terrorism video and I've got to say it sickens me," Mr Rudd said.
"Our attitude to terrorists is zero tolerance.
"We do have a concern about the possibility of home-grown terrorism ... and we believe that these individuals need to be hunted down and brought to justice."
The video also featured blurred footage said to be of a rocket attack on a helicopter that killed 16 US soldiers in June.
The man in the video, speaking against a backdrop of trees, claimed a group of al-Qaeda fighters had carried out the operation.
"The animals under Islam will not just let you kill our families in Palestine, Afghanistan, Kashmir and the Balkans, Indonesia, the Caucuses and elsewhere," the masked man said.
"It is time for us to be equals. As you kill us, you'll be killed. As you bomb us, you will be bombed."
The prospect of an Australian terrorist comes amid growing concerns about extremists living and operating within Australia, and growing calls for them to be deported.
Attorney-General Philip Ruddock's office confirmed that ASIO was aware of the footage and was taking the matter seriously.
"We've been advised that ASIO is looking at the footage very carefully and will keep us informed of any developments," a spokeswoman for Mr Ruddock said.
An ASIO spokeswoman would not comment on the investigation.
Mr Downer said efforts would be made to try to identify the man.
"Obviously you have his voice, visually he has a balaclava on so that will be extremely difficult (to visually identify him) but experts will be having a look at that," Mr Downer said.
"He certainly speaks fluent English, he could be British or he could be an Australian.
"Bearing in mind we do have a very small number of Australians who are jihadists, who have joined the jihad movement, (who) have trained with al-Qaeda, we can't rule it out that it is an Australian."
Terrorism expert Clive Williams from the Australian National University said the video appeared to be the work of al-Qaeda, and seemed to be authentic.
The fact the terrorists had used a person with an Australian accent in the message was interesting, Mr Williams said.
"It's probably intended to show the organisation has international support," he said.
lol check out the guy's photo in the link! He looks pissed off
Seems like Australia is a terrorist country now, the American missiles and 'war on terror' invasion forces can't be far away
