the main thing in this dot pt is the conditions under which each is used, rather than how the things work.

the pulse oximeter is better for monitering the condition of a patient because its reasonably accurate and reliable and provides continuous, real time results.
the ABG analysis is good for the diagnosis of illness because it is very accurate and provides actual values in mm Hg rather than just a % saturation and it measures the CO2 and pH as well as O2. however, there is some delay between taking a blood sample and getting the results, so its not so good for continuous monitering and its more intrusive than the pulse oximeter.
