Can someone tell me what courses/ units of study I will be completing first semester, and do a draft timetable or something? I am doing com/law at usyd, and not sure if this matters, but I eventually want to major in finance, and also enjoy economics.

Sorry not sure about business but for law - the 2013 draft timetable for law subjects is available on the law school website here http://sydney.edu.au/law/cstudent/undergrad/docs_pdfs/2013_LLBTimetable.pdf

It won't be much use without knowing the times for the business subjects, but it will give an indication about law times. :)

from memory, aren't there already 4 core subjects that you have to complete in first year?

Just follow the progression guide but swap BUSS1030 and BUSS1020. Then take FINC2011 as your semester two elective. 1020 and 1040 are the assumed knowledge for FINC2011 and a lot of people who want to get a headstart in their finance major swap 1030 and 1020 so they can take corporate finance 1 in first year.

It's recommended to leave it for 2nd year as it has a few core buss units as assumed knowledge, but technically you're allowed to do it whenever you want since there's no prerequisites.

Also what would be the point of swapping 1030 and 1020 when both are assumed knowledge for FINC2011?

Thanks

Better off swapping BUSS1040 for 1020, as there isn't really anything directly relevant from 1040 (which is mostly micro stuff) for FINC2011. Most useful out of the 3 assumed units would probably be BUSS1030 since you'll need to understand financial statements/reports, and BUSS1020 is useful because there's a quite a bit on probabilities/covariance/correlation in risk/return calculations.
