When I did popular culture (Barbie) we looked at a timeline of her production. If you can get something like this on the development of reality TV, you might be able to see where it began and how it has now become a world-wide phenomena. Do you know of the first reality program that aired in the world? That would definitely be a starting point.

Mishka is right. Construct a timeline.
Look at when did the first sign of reality TV appeared and discuss how it has proliferated in recent year. Then for a depth study, look at ONE specific show, like The Amazing Race, and trace its origin, and evaluate why it has been so successful. What local production inspired this show? Then talk about its impact on the national level, that is, the US, and eventually led to a global sucess.
