I think you can make B5 cutoff despite harsh aligning so you can still manage that ATAR

So teachers say do what you can perform best in so it would be human nature to undertake the easiest option available, right? But so why does everyone seem to hate the fact that they chose English standard and they exaggerate the negative effect it's scaling will have on their atar? How bad is it really scaling wise?
You should always do Advanced if possible. The difference in difficulty between Standard and Advanced is marginal, but the difference in aligning is significant. It just isnt worth the trade-off.

Not enough information. You could be 1% behind first place for standard, whereas 30% behind in advanced; or vice-versa. Both may yield completely different HSC results. You can't quantify a rank because marks determine your rank; ranks do not determine your marks.

Being 5/200 does not necessarily put you in a better position than being 10/50; or vice-versa. Also, you are comparing 2 different subjects and 2 different cohorts, so it's not as simple as saying one or the other.
This pretty much - these type of scenario's are way to vague for definitive answers.

Some 90% of the state do standard english.
Of those 90% who do so only 0.51% or some similar figure of that got a band six last year.

10% of the state or so does advanced english.
Of those 10%, 12.58% of them get band sixes.

Put it in perspective :)

Isn't that expected though?

Those are just statistics they don't even take into account who those people are.
1. Those who slack off/don't study will surely be studying/asked to take English (Standard). That will increase the state % of people doing standard, and lower the % of B6 in standard
2. If those same people who got B6 in advanced moved to standard, they too would still get a B6 and hence increase the % of number of B6 in standard.

Their percentage is low because the "smarter" kids do advanced.
