I was happy with my mark. I got 98% (test was out of 96) and I lost 1 and a half marks only. But it was an easy test, too bad the class average was only about 60% which says a lot about the state of maths students this year at our school lol.

What is a 'z score'?
how many standard deviations you are above/below the mean.

i don't think any NSW high schools do that. though every secondary-high schools having yr 11/12 (in ACT) do that.

a z-score gives an exceptionally accurate scale of how well you are/performed compared to the cohort, something i believe simple A-E grades fail to do. seeing a z-score of +2.5 is unimaginably rare, and getting a z-score on an exam/assessable item/final course score of over +2.0 is outstanding. [statistically speaking, a z-score of 0 means you're right on the average. not doing good, not doing bad.]

this only applies to a rather normal distribution.

Hey
I go to a publicselective, boys high school
46% in maths, 10% above my class average.
Grades average is around 50%.
Apparently heaps of people get band 6's!
How does this work?

I got 75% - above average.. around 15th because of 3unit class, 7th between 2unit classes.

1/2 mark cause of a silly error in the coordinate geo section
1 mark in similar triangles question (i got the corresponding sides wrong, i hate that stuff)

haha that stuffs a bitch, i always get the similar sides wrong n stuff, luckily i ddin't have that stuff in my test.
my test was all equations, i was like omg wtf it was basically integration, differentiation and sequences etc
there was no coordinate stuff or anything past band 3 q's so i think there will be a few 90's in my class this time round (a change for once LOL!)

i think you misunderstood me. i'm saying scores and results are ranked using standard deviations in year 11/12, and the process/theory of standard deviation is taught in statistics in year 10. ;)

i got 95%
pretty fukin pissed off. i totally missed one question worth 2 marks. and another question i lost 2 marks for was because i misread the question (fucked up probability shitty shit). i done the answer in like 5 seconds on the board just to prove the fuckers that i could do it

i can't complain too much, 2nd was 85%, and no one has beaten me in maths exams for yr 12 so far ;)

initially it was 100, the teacher even gave me full marks for the question i didn't do because it was like soo fukin easy (had put in like 1 number lol), and the probability one flew right passed his head
then days later he figured it was 95% the fucker
