hey guys

in my school we have a very large cohort like 130 people doing advanced maths
i know how people say your rank is what matters, not your marks
but im gettin like 40% unfortunately but rank is approx 60 out of the 130
( no idea how im beating 70 people with 40% ... schools ranled in the low 200's too)
the thing is in advanced maths there are a lot of people who get marks in the 80s and 90s and theres like a sudden drop to marks like mine...

now ive told u everything, im just wondering, only my ranks matter still? or am i kinda screwd up the backside?

thanks in advance homies

Thats not entirely true... read this:
http://www.boredofstudies.org/wiki/index.php?title=UAI:Moderating

assuming the person tight above you got 80 and the person below you got 30, there will be a huge difference between coming 60th with 79% and coming 60th with 31%

Everything should make sense if you think about how you would design the system.

for example in a 10 student class with internal assessment marks:

case one:
90 90 90 90 90 90 90 80 20 10

case two:
90 90 90 90 90 90 90 30 20 10

case three:
9 9 9 9 9 9 9 8 2 1 (out of 100!)

case four:
100 100 100 100 100 100 100 90 30 20

first point to make is that cases one three and four have identical effects on the final marks of the students. that is .. so if every student is given 10 extra marks (or any number to that effect) there's is no difference. Also, if the marks are scaled(nultiplied by a number) by the same factor then again, nothing really changes.

second point is that in case two, the person with 30 while still being ranked 8th like the person with 80 in the first case, his moderated mark will be worse (probably alot worse).

Ranks: positions in an increasing or decreasing ordering, labelled as 1, 2, ... n. The minimum (and maximum) are assigned rank either 1 or n. Ranks may be averaged where values are tied.

Ranks matter. The relative difference in marks between ranks also count.
