And how long should each of the 7-8 paragraphs be?

You should quote too. It's always nice to read an essay at 8pm at night where the student a) knows what they're talking about b) answers the question and doesn't just tell us everything they know and c) has read widely on the topic - eg has comments from historians on the topic.

I've gotten 7-8 pages in every HSC essay I've done so far, so this is the aim for Modern.

I'm memorising key dates and trying to get some statistics in there as well. I'm not quoting historians, but I am quoting involved people.

What are my chances for good marks?

You should have historiographical paragraphs as well. As for length, I think you won;t be able to say what needs to be said in any less than 4 pgs. a having said that, any more than 8 and your probably disgressing.

Everyone writes at different speeds. It's important to get a feel of your own speed early on, practice copying out a passage in 45minutes, then count and see how many pages you wrote. If you wrote 4 pages, then for the exam you should be planning to write about 3 1/2 page, the extra time for planning and editting.
