I go to a school were there are about 40% of the kids who actually try and the rest who don't even care about getting an atar and are pretty much stupid. I wanna know what are the chances of being able to get a decent atar in these circumstances? Will it affect my atar too much? :(

Well, it depends on a variety of factors, but generally speaking and without going into too much detail, if you and the people who try occupy the top ranks and perform well on the final exams, then it shouldnt be too much of a problem. With the HSC, I am firmly of the belief that the main determinant of a students ATAR is the student themself. Going to a poor school can have some impact on your ATAR in certain circumstances, but if you put in the effort and have the ability, you should do well regardless of where you go.

Just do the best with what you have.
I went to a school where far fewer than 40% actually cared, and I didn't do too shabby.

Do your best and you'll be fine. Good luck! :)

It should be easier to get good ranks then, aim for 1 for a complete non effect or to be in the top outlier group and it will be slight.

It is theoretically possible to get 99.95 no matter what school you are at. Don't let it be an excuse, and strive for greatness :)

School ranks helps much more to determine how hard your ATAR might be hit. Of course in all cases the rank is determined by the cohert, but if yours is top 100 they don't tend to fluctuate too much.

On a note; at least a third of my cohort is international students from countries like China, alot of them sleep in class and their ranks aren't that great yet every year at the end these people pull themselves up alot and suddenly gun down to some competitive ranks in each subject. So what I'm trying to say is...don't look at it so negatively alreadt, sure some don't care, but I doubt you talked to 40% of your cohort about ATAR and they all said they don't want one. Some of them might be studying at home instead or look like they don't want an ATAR to suddenly suprise people,etc...

If your school is ranked in the 600s...that could be a different story then.
