Apply for a hotmail account.
Type in the address as the one you want.
If it says it's taken, then it exists.

The method I mentioned only shows if the address exists. It doesn't give you any info on when it was taken, or who it belongs to, or anything like that...

I'm just keen to know about my missing friend. And I checked, it still exists so it means the id is in use.

Nopes it not always remain there.. after 90 days anyone can use it as their new address.

an existing ID doesn't mean it's in use, i believe that even if the account is deactivated (by means of lack of activity), the ID remains reserved.
I specifically deleted an account I had formerly, and when I signed up for another one a year later, it was still reserved albeit the account obliterated . So, I guess if you want to seek a missing friend, this option isn't really all that reliable.
