You can also soak wood splints in the solution and let it dry before waving them through the flame.
All you need to do is get the cation into the flame. It doesnt matter how you go about it.

You may also use platinum wire, soak in 4M HCl and dip into the salt of question, then into the flame.

I'm the opposite; I go to a public school and I didn't use spray bottles (I used a wire... yeah, it could've been platinum.)

I beleive the proper wire thing is first put a Pt wire in the flame, then clean in conc. HCl, dip into the solution you are testing, then into the flame to see the color it burns.
You can also use a spray bottle filled with the solution you are testing, or use a paddle pop stick soaked in the solution and put that into the flame

If it wasnt platinum your wire could dissolve and contaminate your results. Platinum is one of the few metals that does not dissolve in concentrated hydrochloric acid.

ok basically u get a hydrous solution of various cations.

spray them into a bunsen burner flame.

observe the flame color change with a labratory spectrascope.

ur results should be:

calcium- red
copper- blue/green
strontium- red
barium- green
sodium- yello
potassium- purple.

lol...we were heaps dodgy. We got a heating basin and poured some of the substance of interest in, add conc HCl and direct bunsen flame into it. Observe colour. Reminsice about dodginess of performed pracs.
