Hey just wondering if anyone could give me a brief description of how High performance liquid chromatography and gas/liquid chromatography work? i have a rough idea but if it came up tomorrow i probably wouldnt get any marks.

The substance being analysed is vapourised and injected into a stream of helium. This stream of gas is passed over a stationary phase.

As the stream of gas moves through the chamber its movement will be impeded according to the factor being analysed, absorbtion if the stationary phase is solid or solubility if the stationary phase is liquid. Because of the different properties of the components of the substance being analysed there will be a separation which allows them to be analysed separately as they emerge.

hope that helps

high performance chromatography was in last years so it wont be in this year. thank god. so yeah im guessing a big 5 or 6 marker on mass spec or gas/liquid
