Human Cloning? Your opinions!

On the news last night, they said the ban is being lifted! What's your opinion?

Pink Butterfly, I suggest that in the future you take the time to look into an issue before you post and to check your spelling before you hit the submit button, too.

An independent committee this week recommended lifting the ban on therapeutic cloning, a controversial technique in which an embryo is cloned from a patient's cell and the stem cells are collected. The embryo is destroyed in the process.

The committee's findings are likely to trigger a conscience vote in Parliament.

http://www.smh.com.au/news/science/one-step-closer-to-embryo-cloning/2005/12/19/1134840796154.html says that there was a report done, and it recommended:

- Ban to be lifted on creation of human embryo clones for research (therapeutic cloning).
- Ban to remain on reproductive cloning.

- Therapeutic cloning using animal rather than human eggs allowed.

- Research on early fertilisation of human egg and sperm to be allowed until first cell division of embryo.

- A national stem cell bank to be established.

Some MPs are very antsy about it: http://www.theage.com.au/news/Natio...alls-go-too-far/2005/12/20/1134840805962.html

So, it's not going to go ahead immediately, but the idea of lifting the ban is on the table.

I really couldn't care less about cloning.

I know, without really tight supervision, the private sector will abuse the technology, but I think it will just be another buyer/surplier situation.

But the leading Research & Developers of any field will always be the private sector, especially in medicine.

thinking as a future scientist, i think it's advanced/cool, i mean, it's interesting that you can copy things, the mechanisms, it just attracts me. but then just thinking about it normally, i wouldnt want another person that looks like me, or, i wouldnt want them to re-create my child if it died for instance, because it would feel just awkward, it's going to be a completely different being....with similar appearance and actions, but still, it's not the original, and the original is always the best methinks, it's just going against the natural way of the world.

I'm totally against it fullstop. Proven evidence has shown adult stem cells are more useful anyway. Stop trying to play God ppl

This idea is fucking disgusting. I dont care if people have every chance at having retarded children, they were meant to be that way for a reason and its playing god.

if it is used for health benefits, such as 'cloning' specific body parts, like kidneys, hearts, livers, tissue, etc. then i am up for it. the implications of organ implants for saving lives are enormous. i suppose people dont have to be organ donors nemore...

however, i must agree that this human cloning technology will be abused by the private sector. only those with a fat purse would be able to afford 'cloning', as so to make their children, or themselves, healthier, stronger, etc...those without the money will have to be left out. again, further supports the elitist factor with wealthy people because they have better health, and further widens the gap between rich and poor. mmmmmm not good at all.

if at all, it should benefit those that are needed most, e.g. the public sector, or, disabled people, etc...

Jeez, have faith in some human endeavour. The government can restrict the licensing of cloning to the CSIRO or other government organisations to develop liberal cloning.
