btw, did you know that next year the imo will for the first time since 1988 be held in Australia.

This time it will be in Melbourne. In 1988 it was in Canberra.

results so far for australia:

probably finalised tomorrow
lots of 7s there especially for AUS3 so expect at least 1 medal
medal cutoffs not finalised either

going through all 9 pages there are a lot of 0s for P3 and P6 - negatively impacting on medal cutoffs

ones to watch: 2 potential perfect scorers from china - CHN4 and CHN5, especially CHN4 who already got 7 for both P3 and P6!

but in all 9 pages there are only 2 with 35 so far - which means there can only be at most 2 perfect scorers.

hard to predict what will happen and although china is doing really well, so far usa is beating china on points with 162 so far vs. china's 157:

Turns out there was 1 perfect scorer from China, Haojia Shi who incidentally did the same thing last year

But USA beat China on points with 192 and hence USA is ranked 1 out of 108 countries, and China ranked 2
Also medal cutoffs are bronze≥16, silver≥22, gold≥29

honourable mention (HM) means a 7 in any question

i have met maths teachers who said they can't do any imo questions.

so a 7 in any question is a good achievement, especially for a year 10 student - even if they don't get a medal.

as you can see Amber Li, a year 10 student from Pymble Ladies College is one such contestant.

btw did you notice that australia beat both china AND the usa in question 4?

the total for australia in question 4 was 42, but usa and china both got 40.

i have met maths teachers who said they can't do any imo questions.

None of the maths teachers at our local high school can do any AMO questions, let alone IMO questions, and only one teacher in the whole school (the HoD who had taught at JRAHS for a couple of years) can actually do HSC maths extension 2 questions. They are still doing better than the Science Dept, where the only teacher who could do any physics departed in 2023, leaving the Yr 12 2024 Physics class with a biology teacher who couldn’t do more than 10% of any HSC physics past paper.
