No I definitely won't be doing that if I will lose my deposit. I will call UniLodge on Monday. It's weird, two weeks and ANU gives me something that wasn't even one of my preferences. 1 day and I get my first preference for my late round offer.
I agree, it has been pretty messed up. I was given less than a day to accept the offer or it would lapse. The ANU website clearly said I had 5 days. Hoping that there are people who have to live off campus means they might be happy with one less person... here's hoping anyway.

IMPORTANT - Please read carefully
This email explains the ANU offer being made to you as an incoming student who qualifies for the accommodation guarantee.
As advised in previous emails, on-campus residences are now at capacity. Although few vacancies may arise from declined offers ANU is no longer relying on these and is making arrangements to secure off campus accommodation in an extremely difficult local market. Any emerging vacancies will continue to be offered regardless of your response to this email.
I appreciate this is not what we would all prefer but under the guarantee ANU sources and contracts the accommodation so you have some assurance of cost and standard.
As a first option, for Semester 1 2008 we are offering a motel style room with ensuite bathroom, in some instances on a twin share basis, all on a self-catering basis. A twin share arrangement will be reflected in the price and shares will be organised by the Hall. These rooms will be in close proximity to an ANU Hall, and will function as an extension to that Hall. Students will be members of the Hall and as such will cook, socialise and contribute to the Residents' Committee.Pastoral care offered in Hall will be extended to the residents sleeping in motel rooms.Students will have swipe card access to the Hall. Rates will be in the vicinity of $150 - $180 per week. Students in motel accommodation will be given priority over any incoming students in Semester 2.
Response required: I will accept an offer of a motel room linked to a Hall.
If demand exceeds this option, we will offer places in a furnished group house (ANU students only, with rent paid to ANU). For more independent or older students, this may be preferable. If required these group houses will be linked to an on-campus Hall for membership of and participation in that community.
Response required: I prefer the group house option over a motel room.
Thank you for your understanding. ANU is making efforts to address the accommodation shortage in Canberra for its students. An additional 500 beds is under construction and will open in February 2009.
Responses are required before 5pm, Wednesday 6th of February 2008.
Ive just received this email.... anyone in the same boat?
was anyone here lucky enough to have stayed in these motels their talking about? if so whats it like? or anything heard anything about them from someone whom stayed there. i really dont know what to do now.... i wouldnt mind staying at a motel if i was guaranteed a place at a hall next sem. would like to hear some opinions on the 2 choices.. cheers

hope its not in some dodgy motel.....
Hmm... well there might be an extra spot at John XXIII, if I choose not to take up my Arts/Laws course at ANU. But not living at a residential college would be a huge disappointment. It was one of the main attractions of going to uni. I expect I shall I have to pay a $100 administration fee if I cancel my contract this week. By next week the administration fee for cancelling the contract will increase to $300. But I'll have it all decided in about six hours, when I have to travel to Monash Uni to enrol in Med. Man, I hate decisions, especially when they spring the offers/enrolment on you at the very last minute.

Rex Hotel... 160p/w they got a floor for the students. good work to the staff

On other news a friend from ursies told me about something that is happening for returning residents. They are offering residents $2.5K (plus their years rent) to move out of ursies, and move into a share house off the anu campus. tbh that means anu will be out of pocket, but it looks like they really *are* trying to help you guys out and get you into college.

apparently we're not allow access to the pool lounge etc which is fair enough cause were paying a night stay for a weeks. but im sure we'll end up there after a big night thinking that its a good idea only to regret it when we get caught. i can see it happening already...
Just spoke with a friend of a friend who has a room available in a house in Hawker (about a ten minute drive away). It'll be $160 a week as opposed to $230 at UniLodge, which is really quite a lot. I'm going to give the UL people a call tomorrow to see how much they'll rob me for cancelling. Does this sound like a good move?
One of the reasons I think why they charge so much is because UL is mostly for cashed up internationals. I ran into one of my old teachers today and she couldn't believe how much they charge uni students for accommodation. She said that's about what she pays rent on her 4 bedroom HOUSE! Got me pretty mad so that's why I'm trying to find an alternative.
Last year, as soon as i heard that UL2 was being built, i wrote a letter to ANU explaining to faults with the 1st UL. After a few days i received a reply of "thankyou for your rather candid responce, we will take that into consideration".
