Ronald Reagan once said that "Government is the problem not the solution" to the quality of life of global citizens. Do you agree and why?
It should be noted that without government and a proper legal system we would end up with anarchy. Without welfare rights we would have hundreds of thousands of Australians living in poverty.

LOL

But................... Of course government is the solution. It's really the only institution with the financial and social backing to deal with crime, welfare, etc. country-wide.

And that also happens to be why it's perceived as the problem. If a giant company collapses and thousands lose their jobs, it's the government's fault. Because there wasn't enough regulation of the relevant industry. If there's a natural disaster and people die, it's the government's fault. Because it didn't have appropriate response plans in place. Just that we have a tendency to blame the government for everything bad that happens :)

Plus some people who work for the government are incompetent.
Yea, but i think the question has to do something with arguing that by trying to increase the standard of living of the society, the government actually creates more problems.
Side note: I think government is needed

A) decreased Welfare Payments = increased Crime= increased Taxation= increased Corporate cutbacks = increased unemployment = increased people on welfare.
B) Increased Welfare Payments = increased opportunities to get employment= decreased taxation = decreased Corporate cutbacks = decreased unemployment = decreased people on welfare payments.
