What sort of exams do they have to select people to enter a specialisation ?
Different fellowships/colleges have different exam: e.g. College of Emergency Medicine - Two years of post graduate experience are required prior to entry into the training program. The first year of training is a provisional year during which candidates must complete at least six months of emergency department work and pass a basic sciences exam. Acceptance into further training is then dependent on references from supervising specialists. Joint training in emergency medicine and paediatrics is available in collaboration with the Royal Australian College of Physicians. It is also possible to achieve dual fellowship with the Joint Faculty for Intensive Care Medicine.
Entry to different specialist training regimes have different criteria, however I have almost doubt that the seleciton process will be even harder in the future due to medical student tsunami, lack of senior clinicians, and the state and federal governments unwillingness to fund additional training places.
